Installing the system board

Prerequisites

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
  1. Follow the safety guidelines listed in safety instructions section.

  2. Keep the Phillips #2 screwdriver and the Hex nut driver-5 mm ready.

  3. Unpack the new system board assembly.

CAUTION: Do not lift the system board by holding a memory module, processor, or other components.
CAUTION: Take care not to damage the system identification button while placing the system board into the chassis.

Steps

  1. Hold the system board by the connector end and orient it toward the front of the chassis.
  2. Align the USB connectors with the slots on the front wall of the chassis.
  3. Lower the system board and install the screws to secure the system board to the chassis.

Next steps

  1. Install the following:

    1. Internal USB key

    2. SD vFlash card

    3. IDSDM or rSPI card

    4. NDC

    5. PCIe mezzanine cards

    6. PCIe extender or storage controller card

    7. Hard drive or SSD cage

    8. Hard drive or SSD backplane

    9. Hard drive(s) or SSD(s)

      NOTE: Ensure that you reinstall the hard drives or SSDs in their original locations.
    10. Cooling shroud

    11. Memory modules

    12. Processor(s) and heat sink(s)

  2. Remove the plastic I/O connector covers from the back of the system.

  3. Follow the procedure listed in the After working inside your system section.

  4. Import your new or existing iDRAC Enterprise license. For more information, see the iDRAC8 User's Guide at Dell.com/idracmanuals.

  5. Ensure that you:
    1. Use the Easy Restore feature to restore the Service Tag. For more information, see the Restoring the Service Tag by using Easy Restore section.
    2. If the Service Tag is not backed up in the backup flash device, enter the system Service Tag manually. For more information, see the Restoring the Service Tag by using Easy Restore section.
    3. Update the BIOS and iDRAC versions.
    4. Reenable the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). For more information, see the Reenabling the TPM for BitLocker users section or the Reenabling the TPM for Intel TXT users section.
