Install OS10 upgrade

After you download and unpack a new OS10 binary image as described in Download OS10 image for upgrade, follow these steps:

NOTE:
  • During the OS10 image upgrade process in a VLT setup, when the VLT peers are running different software versions, make no configuration changes on a VLT peer. Ensure that both nodes are upgraded to the same version before you make any configuration change.
  • Use the image download command to download the software image to the system — it does not install the software on your device. The image install command installs the downloaded image, which becomes the standby image.
  • If the active image includes any modified text files or custom packages that were installed earlier, they would not be available with the standby image. Backup the modified files and re-install the packages after downloading the image.
  • If you are upgrading OS10 on a Z9100-ON switch, we recommend that you perform an ONIE fresh installation. See Installation using ONIE for more information.
  • On an MX-Series I/O module, install OS10 upgrades in downloaded DUP files by following the instructions in the Dell EMC SmartFabric OS10 Release Notes—Release 10.5.0.
  • While performing an upgrade from 10.4.0E.R4S to 10.5.0.4 and later in GUI mode, all the IOMs may get upgraded with a time-out notification to the OME-M or an IOM (DNV Master) may not get upgraded. Check the IOMs to ascertain whether the upgrade was successful or not. If the IOMs did not get upgraded, re-initiate the upgrade for the impacted nodes.
CAUTION: Please do not use copy commands to download the image to the switch, as it may result in loss of disk space for critical system applications and functions, and it may be difficult to locate the image.
  1. (Optional) Backup the current running configuration to the startup configuration in EXEC mode.
    OS10# copy running-configuration startup-configuration
  2. Backup the startup configuration in EXEC mode.
    OS10# copy config://startup.xml config://<backup file name>
  3. Download the new software image from the Dell Support Site, extract the bin files from the tar file, and save the file in EXEC mode.
    OS10# image download file-url
    For example:
    OS10# image download ftp://userid:passwd@hostip:/filepath
NOTE:Some Windows unzip applications insert extra carriage returns (CR) or line feeds (LF) when they extract the contents of a .tar file, which may corrupt the downloaded OS10 binary image. Turn off this option if you use a Windows-based tool to untar an OS10 binary file.
  4. (Optional) View the current software download status in EXEC mode.
    OS10# show image status
  5. (Applicable only if you are presently running Release 10.5.0.x or earlier release and installing 10.5.2.0 or later now) Cancel any staged firmware update using the image cancel command.
    OS10# image cancel
  6. Install the 10.5.2.0 or later software image in EXEC mode.
    OS10# image install image-url
    For example:
    OS10# image install image://filename.bin
NOTE:OS10 has two images: A and B. One image is active, which is the present running version and used as the running software at the next system reload. The other image remains standby, used for software upgrades.

The image install command installs the downloaded image to the system. If you had modified text files or installed custom packages, they would not be available with the standby image. Back up the modified files and reinstall the packages after downloading the standby image.

NOTE:On an MX9116n Fabric Switching Engine and MX5108n Ethernet Switch, if you install an OS10 image using a DUP file, all firmware components are upgraded. The firmware upgrade is stored as a pending installation until you reload the switch. To view the contents of the firmware upgrade, use the show image firmware command.
  7. (Optional) View the status of the current software install in EXEC mode.
    OS10# show image status
  8. (Optional) Verify the standby image version.
    OS10# show boot detail
    Current system image information detail:

        OS10# show boot detail

Restrictions on Upgrade to Release 10.5.1.0 or later version

After you install the 10.5.1.x or later image and before you perform a reload, the following images are available in the switch:

  • Image A: 10.5.0.0 (active)
  • Image B: 10.5.1.0 or later (standby)

During this state, you must not install 10.5.0.x or an earlier release again in the switch. Release 10.5.1.x or later ONIE preparation and setup is not reversible and the switch only boots using the 10.5.1.x or later image.
