Customize programmable buttons

Use Dell Rugged Control Center to assign actions to the hardware buttons your rugged system may support.

NOTE: Not all rugged devices support programmable buttons. See your device user guide for more information about how to assign actions to programmable buttons your device supports.

NOTE: Availability of both press and hold touch types depends on your rugged device. See your device system manual to determine the touch types your system supports.

Both hardware and virtual programmable buttons may support two types of touch: press, and press and hold. If your device supports these two types of touch, each button can be configured to perform up to two different tasks depending on the type of touch used. See Table 1 for the variety of programmable task options available, and their corresponding description.

  1. Launch Dell Rugged Control Center on your tablet or laptop.
  2. Click the Open Dashboard icon at the top of the Ribbon.

  3. Click Edit icon in the Programmable Hardware Buttons section of the Dashboard.
    The Edit Programmable Hardware Buttons window displays.
  4. Click task options for a programmable button, selecting one task option for a short press, and one for a long press of the button. See the following table for available task options:

    NOTE: Available task options are dependent upon the model of your rugged device and hardware configuration; not all options may be available to you.

    Move backward Go backward in a web browser.
    Move forward. Go forward in a web browser.
    Open favorites Open Favorites list in a web browser.
    Open home page Open home page in web browser.
    Open search page Open default search page in web browser.
    Refresh page Refresh web browser page.
    Scroll down Scroll page down.
    Scroll up Scroll page up.
    Show/hide tablet PC input panel Open Windows on-screen tablet input panel (tablets only).
    Show/Hide Windows Mobility Center Open Windows Mobility Center.
    Open tablet PC settings Open Windows Tablet PC Settings panel.
    Key combination Press a user-definable key or key combination such as Alt+4.
    Open Windows Action Center Open Windows Action Center, Windows+A. (Windows 10 only)
    Windows Flip Open Windows Flip, Alt+Tab.
    Windows Modern Task Switcher Open Windows Flip 3D, Windows Key+Tab.
    Open Dell Rugged Control Center Open Dell Rugged Control Center Dashboard.
    Turn off display Switch display on/off (cannot be assigned to virtual buttons).
    Toggle display rotation Toggles between 2x portrait (90 left, 90 right/normal landscape orientation).
    Night Mode Turns display to lowest brightness setting. Pressing again resumes previous backlight settings.
    Microphone mute Switch microphone on/off.
    Touch Screen On/Off Switch touch screen on/off.
    Launch program Opens user-defined program (only files with .exe, .com, .cmd. or .bat file extensions).
    Barcode scan Triggers the barcode scanner

    Option 1: Data only

    Option 2: Data+Carriage Return

    Option 3: Data+Tab

    Option 4: Toggle presentation mode on or off. These settings are stored in the barcode scanner configuration settings. See Change barcode scanner mode.

    Camera control

    Triggers the camera, if the camera is not running (Windows 7 only).

    Click Camera to open Dell Camera.

    You can perform the following:
    • To take a photo, short press the camera when the camera is in photo mode. If the camera is in video mode, a short press will switch the camera to photo mode.
    • To start and stop video recording, long press the camera when the camera is in video mode.

    NOTE: You can select the aspect ratio setting to apply for a photo. This setting becomes the default setting.

    Flashlight Toggle Flashlight on/off.
    Stealth Mode Toggle Stealth Mode on/off (cannot be assigned to virtual buttons).
    Lock Computer Lock computer.
    Scratch Pad Allows you to write free flow text and share that as email or save as pdf.

    NOTE: This feature requires the Windows 10 operating system. You must have Microsoft Outlook 2013 or later desktop version to share the file as email.

  5. To return to the Dashboard, click the right-pointing arrow at the upper left portion of the window.
  6. To close the Dashboard, click the Close Dashboard icon at the top of the Ribbon or the X icon in the upper right of the Dashboard.
