How to replace the Drive Backplane on a PowerEdge R6715

This 3D experience gives you the step by step process of replacing the Drive Backplane and a PE R6715. The procedure will also include removing the System Cover, Front Bezel, Drive Carrier - 2.5 inch, Drive Backplane Cover and reinstalling them.

Removal

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover highlighted in blue.
2. Using a Philips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock counterclockwise to the unlock position.
3. Lift the release latch until the system cover slides back.
4. Lift the cover from the system.

Front Bezel

1. Identify the front bezel highlighted in blue.
2. Unlock the front bezel with the key.
3. Press the release button and disengage the left end of the bezel.
4. Unhook the right end and remove the front bezel.

Drive Carrier - 2.5 inch

1. Identify the drive carrier highlighted in blue.
2. Press the release button to open the drive carrier release handle.
3. Holding the drive carrier release handle, slide the drive carrier out of the drive slot.

Drive Backplane Cover

1. Identify the drive backplane cover highlighted in blue.
2. Slide and lift the drive backplane cover in the direction of the arrows marked on the cover.

Drive Backplane

1. Identify the drive backplane highlighted in blue.
2. Disconnect all the data and power cables from the backplane.
3. Move the left control panel cable to remove the backplane.
4. Press the blue release tabs to disengage the backplane from the hooks on the system.
5. Lift and pull the drive backplane out of the system.

Install

Drive Backplane

1. Identify the drive backplane location highlighted in blue.
2. Align and insert the backplane into the system and lower until the blue release tabs click into place.
3. Route the left control panel cable under the bracket.
4. Connect all the data and power cables to the backplane.

Drive Backplane Cover

1. Identify the drive backplane cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align with the guide slots and slide the drive backplane cover to the front of the system until it fits into place.

Drive Carrier - 2.5 inch

1. Identify the drive carrier location highlighted in blue.
2. Press the release button on the front of the drive carrier to open the release handle.
3. Slide the drive carrier into the drive slot.
4. Close the drive carrier release handle to lock the drive in place.

Front Bezel

1. Identify the front bezel location highlighted in blue.
2. Align and insert the tabs on the bezel into the slots on the system.
3. Press the bezel until the release button clicks into place.
4. Lock the front bezel with the key.

System Cover

1. Identify the system cover location highlighted in blue.
2. Align the tabs on the system cover with the guide slots on the system, and slide the system cover.
3. Close the system cover release latch.
4. Using a Philips #2 screwdriver, rotate the lock clockwise to the locked position.
