Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

I noticed that my current fan in my Vostro 200 is screwed on but the fan with E5700 snaps on.  When you installed yours were there any special steps you had to take to use the new fan and snap it in place?  I have purchased this CPU and should be receiving it in about a week.

You need to use the default Dell fan/heatsink unit that was factory install, not the Intel heatsink/fan, as this will not fit the motherboard retention bracket.

The Conroe E6700, 2.66GHz, 4MB,1066FSB, B2 should be supported by the Vostro 200, providing BIOS Version 1.0.16 is installed.

I read on newegg that someone got the E6700 to work on the Vostro 200.  I'm going to be daring and greedy and give it a shot.  I've updated my BIOS to the newest version and I'm crossing my fingers.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Joe.

I have no thoughts on the subject, except maybe, the case fan on the back panel, I upgrade my 530 MT [that's a clone of the Vostro 200] with an E8400 Core 2 Duo and used the factory installed default heatsink and never had any issues with either the case fan, or heatsink/fan that are connected to the motherboard.

But, to be fair, prior to installing the E8400, I had upgraded the video card and to help cool this, I installed another case fan behind the front air intakes, under the hard drives, to increase air flow inside the case.   This fan is connected to PSU's wiring harness.

I got the 3.2Ghz E6700.  There is a review on Newegg saying this was done:

"Pros: Very Fast. I replaced a 2.0 GHz duel core CPU (an Intel E2180) that was way over tasked. I installed this 3.2 GHz duel core CPU (an Intel E6700) in its place. That DELL computer use to take over 15 minutes to start, and now it takes seconds. The E6700 gave that old DELL the kick it needed. The customer is very happy with the computer now. On simple task, it runs as fast as my E8400.

Cons: It comes with a small heat sink, I like to see some overkill from my heat sinks. Barely good enough just doesn't cut it! I left the E2180's heat sink in the computer.

Other Thoughts: The Dell Vostro Desktop 200 computer I put this in also had a cooling problem, the back cooling fan plugged into the main bord was barely turning. I wired that fan directly to an extra HDD connector on the power supply and its RPMs rose over 90%. On the power supply, the yellow wire is +12vdc, and the black wire is ground."

This was the only evidence I could find that this could be done successfully.

What do you all think?

Wonderful!  It sounds like I'll be okay based on your experience and the individual from the newegg review.  If not I guess I'll be ebaying a processor and. fan.

I was able to use the Intel heat sink with my Vostro 220s by removing the plastic push-pins in favor of spring-dampened screws from the Thermalright 775 Bolt-Thru kit. It worked a treat!

I think I am wimping out on the E6700 3.2 ghz because Dell's newest BIOS for the Vostro 200, 1.0.16 was release on 4/27/2010 and according to wikipedia the 3.2 ghz E6700 was released on May 30, 2010, so I don't see how it could be supported despite what the guy on newegg said.  Darn.

From wikipedia article:

Pentium E6700

    * SLGUF (R0)

    3.2 GHz     2 MB     1066 MT/s     12×     0.85–1.3625 V     65 W     LGA 775     May 30, 2010     release date

Looks like it will be the e5700.

It may have been released to consumers a month after the BIOS was released, but that doesn't mean the specifications were not provided to Dell well in advance of that date.
