Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade
Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200? I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive. I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping. TIA

Bev has the answer for this. Bev is incredibly good at answering questions about the Vostr 200.

Assuming that you have a Vostro 200 Mini Tower and not the Slimline version.
The Vostro 200 MT does not have a proprietary power supply.
Generic standard ATX power supply units can be installed, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.
You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.
Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.

Vostro 200 with 8GB of RAM (4x2GB) running Windows 7 x64 without issues.
BIOS reports 8192 and Task Manager Physical Memory (MB) Total 8181.
Ubuntu memtest made multiple passes successfully.
Also upgraded CPU from E2160 to E5200 with BIOS 1.0.16 (did not try earlier BIOS versions).
CPU-Z reports Model 0CU409, Chipset P33/G33/G31 Rev. A2
Motherboard DP/N 0CU409 Rev A01
System shipping date 8/1/2008
Arguably smarter to go with a Vostro 260 with i3-2120 and DDR3 memory at current prices, but the customer is always right...

The problem is that it will not be able to use 8GB as it can only use 4GB?

Which MOBO do you have? I am sure the original Vostro 200 MOBOs cannot run more than 4GB for any OS.

I have seen that, but I still wonder if the MOBO is actually using the 8GB rather than just informing you that it exists on the MOBO.

BIOS reports 8192
Windows 7 x64 reports 8181
Ubuntu memtest passed on all 8GB multiple times.
It's all there and all good.

It is commonly the case that the original stated memory capacity is either a conservative statement by the manufacturer or is eventually expanded with a subsequent BIOS update. Both the Vostro 200s I have are running 8GB of DDR2-800 memory, both in 4x2GB configurations. I have experienced this memory issue on a number of systems, both desktop and laptop. As long as you have BIOS 1.0.16, you should be set.

I know im opening an outdated thread here but was wondering what current CPUs I can put in the Vostro 200 slim. The ones listed in this thread are all discontinued @ Newegg.
Thanks!!
