Help Me Choose: Intel® Xeon® Processors for Servers

Intel Icons

A Xeon processor is an Intel CPU designed and manufactured primarily for use in enterprise servers. The Xeon brand is currently available in two processor families: Xeon Scalable Processors (SP) and Xeon E, each of which is designed to handle varying workloads.

Servers powered by Xeon processors are often found performing workload-heavy computation for cloud computing data centers, analytical and trending applications, radar systems, industrial manufacturing, intelligence-gathering programs and much more.

3 Key Attributes of a CPU

Clock Speed – Measured in megahertz (MHz), clock speed represents how fast a processor moves. This is calculated by the number of clock cycles managed per second.
Core count – The number of compute cores available on a CPU or how much compute capability a CPU contains.
Thermal Design Power (TDP) – The power target of the CPU or wattage the CPU runs.

Intel Xeon SP Processors

3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors provide a balanced architecture that delivers built-in AI acceleration and advanced security capabilities, allows you to place your workloads securely where they perform best - from edge to cloud.

The 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor benefits from decades of innovation for the most common workload requirements, supported by close partnerships and deep integrations with the world’s software leaders and solution providers. 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors are optimized for many workload types and performance levels, all with the consistent, open, Intel architecture you know and trust.

Intel Xeon E Processors

Intel Xeon E Processors

For server applications and workloads that do not require the performance scale and advanced capabilities of Intel Xeon Scalable processors, Intel Xeon E processors offer a compelling alternative. Designed for single-processor server platforms, these power-efficient and cost-effective processors feature the essential server features and capabilities needed for entry-level hardware solutions, making them an excellent hardware option for bare metal cloud hosting services.

With higher clock speeds, up to 8 cores, and lower TDPs, Xeon E is perfect for multi-user applications such as email, messaging, print servers, calendar programs, databases, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and other software that facilitates data sharing and collaboration.

Benefits of Intel Xeon E processors
• Supported in entry-level, single-socket rack and tower server platforms
• Essential performance and I/O expandability options for entry-level servers
• Business-ready reliability to support critical services and data needs
• Advanced security technology, known as Intel® Software Guard Extensions (Intel® SGX) data protection
