Using the Dell Update Packages (DUP) is an easy and quick way to update the firmware or drivers of the entire system or individual system components. This article explains how to run these DUP directly from the Operating System (OS).

The major advantage of using a DUP is that the the system does not need to be offline to apply most updates.   

SLN305406_en_US__1icon Updates to the BIOS and iDRAC will require a reboot to complete. DUP enabled drives do not require a reboot as they are specifically designed to allow for updating the drives while the system is still live.

Dell Update packages (DUP) are normally provided for the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 32bit (x86) versions
  • Windows Server 64bit (x64) versions
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • SusSE Linux ES

Location and Use of DUPs

After identifying the hardware requiring updates, the appropriate DUP must be located and downloaded. The easiest way to complete this is as follows

  1. Open a browser window on your server OS and go to Drivers & Downloads
  2. Enter the Service Tag of your server to take you directly to the content specific of the device
  3. If the Service Tag is not known it can be found using command prompt
  4. In the Drivers and Downloads section, ensure the correct operating system for the server is selected
  5. Updates are arranged in categories which can be expanded to see the available updates
  6. The relevant DUP can be identified by file name, as it starts with the expression "DELL EMC Server Update Utility"
  7. Select the DUPs needed and download the package
  8. Once the relevant DUP has been transferred to the system, they can be run by double clicking on the downloaded files and following the below steps.

1. Navigate to the Dell website, select the model and access the needed file


2. Download the file

4. A message will be displayed to confirm the file installation. In some cases a reboot is needed.

Linux Steps.


1. Download the Full ISO file.
2. Use ISO mounting software and mount the downloaded iso image.
3. Open the terminal and explore the mounted folder where the iso image is mounted.
4. Run ./suu -g to launch GUI interface.
