Latitude 5410 Teardown, Removal guide for customer replaceable units (CRUs)
Summary: A guide to those parts of the Dell Latitude 5410 Notebook that Dell considers it OK for anyone to remove and replace.

These guides will take you step by step through the safe removal of what are considered to be the Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) parts of a Latitude 5410 Notebook system. (CRUs are the parts of the system that shouldn't need an engineer to remove or replace.) The guides will also include pictures to reference what's involved.

Note: Be aware that using a large Phillips or Flat Head screwdriver may result in damage to the head of the screws. This would make their removal impossible without speciality tools, that aren't available to our onsite engineers.

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the Access Panel:

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly
-
Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
-

Turn the system over on it's closed lid and loosen the eight (8) captive screws securing the access panel to the chassis

Using a plastic scribe or some other tool that won't mark the plastics, pry the cover up from the left-hand side hinge [1] and work clockwise around the access panel to release it from the chassis

Lift the panel up and away from the chassis

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the Battery:

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
-
Please remove the Access Panel

With the system turned over on its lid, the battery is located in the bottom right-hand side of the system. Disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard

Loosen the single (1) captive screw on the right-hand side of the battery [1]

Lift the battery up an away from the system [2]
Caution:
- Exercise caution when handling Lithium-ion batteries
- Discharge the battery as much as possible before removing it from the system. This can be done by disconnecting the AC adapter from the system to allow the battery to drain
- Do not damage, or penetrate the battery with foreign objects
- Do not expose the battery to high temperatures, or disassemble battery packs and cells
- Do not bend the battery
- Do not use tools of any kind to pry on or against the battery
- Always purchase genuine batteries from Dell or authorized Dell partners and resellers

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

With the system placed on its closed lid, the memory is located in the middle of the system. Pull apart the metal clips holding the DIMM in place [1]

-
When the DIMM lifts up at an angle to the base, pull it out of the socket and away from the system [2]
Note: Please repeat the steps 2 and 3 for any additional memory DIMM's located in the system.

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the Solid State Drive (SSD):

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

With the system on its closed lid, the SSD is located in the bottom right-hand side corner of the system. Remove the two (2) screws that secure it to the chassis [1]

Manouver the SSD support bracket away from the SSD connector [2]
-
Take the SSD card off of the thermal plate

Remove the single (1) screw that secures the SSD bracket to the chassis [1]

-
Lift the bracket out of the slot in the chassis [2]

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the Heatsink and Fan:

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

With the system on its closed lid, the fan is located in the top right-hand side corner of the system. Disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard

Remove the six (6) screws that secure the heatsink to the motherboard [1]
Note: The screwholes on the heatsink are numbered 1 thruough 6. Remove the screws in the order they are marked on the heatsink.

Remove the two (2) screws that secure the fan to the motherboard and lift the assembly up and away from the chassis [2]

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the Coin Cell Battery:

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly
-
Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
-
Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

With the system on its closed lid, the coin cell battery is located at the top left-hand side corner of the system. Disconnect the coin cell battery cable from the motherboard [1]

lift the coin cell battery away from the adhesive on the motherboard

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the MicroSD Memory Card:

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly
-
Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
-

The Micro SD slot is located on the right-hand edge of the system. Push in gently on the card in the slot and release to have it pop out of the slot [1]

Grip the card and pull it the rest of the way out of the slot [2]

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the SIM Card :

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

Please remove the Battery
-

The Micro SIM slot is located on the right-hand edge of the system. Push a SIM card tool or a straightened paper clip gently into the hole on the left-hand side of the SIM card slot filler until it pops out of the slot

Remove the filler and fit the Micro SIM card and push the filler back into the system until it locks in place

Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the WWAN CARD (Cellular):

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly

Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer

Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets

Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

Remove the single (1) screw that secures the WWAN card bracket to the chassis
-
Remove the bracket from on top of the antenna cables and the card will pop up at an angle from the motherboard
-
Disconnect the antenna cables pop connectors from the press studs on the WWAN card
-
Pull the card out of the connector on the motherboard and away from the system
-
Pre-Removal Instructions before removing the WLAN Card (WiFi, Wireless) :

During installation or removal of any hardware always ensure all data is backed up properly
-
Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer
-
Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets
-
Please remove the Access Panel and Battery

With the system on it's closed lid, the WLAN card is located between the SSD and Coin Cell Battery on the left-hand of the system. Remove the single (1) screw that secures the WLAN card bracket to the chassis [1]

Remove the bracket from on top of the antenna cables [2] and the card will pop up at an angle from the motherboard

Disconnect the antenna cables pop connectors from the press studs on the WLAN card [3]
-
Pull the card out of the connector on the motherboard and away from the system [4]
