Symptoms

Color shifting can be observed when Dell customers enable or disable the High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature in Display Settings under the OS environment.

Affected platform list (included but not limited to below)

  • Alienware m15
  • Alienware m15 R2
  • Dell G5 15 5590
  • Dell G7 17 7790
  • XPS 15 7590
  • Precision 5540

Cause

This is expected behavior because the current standard on Windows 10 is Standard Dynamic Range (SDR), which has limited representation ability of the dynamic range compared to what HDR is capable of. That means, HDR allows you to see more of the detail and color in scenes with a high dynamic range.

How to enable/disable the HDR in Windows 10

When displaying non-HDR-supported content like web surfing, office applications, or non-HDR videos, the color shifting would be easily observed. It is highly recommended to disable the HDR feature under normal usage and enable it when displaying HDR-supported content.
