PowerScale: OneFS Upgrades Info Hub
Summary: This article provides an overview of the PowerScale OneFS upgrade process.
Instructions
Welcome to the Dell Technologies PowerScale OneFS Upgrade Info Hub.
The following article provides an overview of the PowerScale OneFS upgrade process that is pulled from the OneFS Upgrade Planning and Process Guide (HTML) (PDF).
Important: If you are upgrading from OneFS 8.x or 9.x, you must follow all the steps detailed in the OneFS Upgrade Planning and Process Guide (HTML) (PDF).
You can also choose to use the SolVe Online tool to help you through your OneFS upgrade.

OneFS upgrades require the following phases:
Phase 1: Planning an upgrade
Planning for your upgrade prepares you and your cluster for the upgrade process.
Planning an upgrade tasks to complete:
- Review required documentation
- Determine type of upgrade
- Verify upgrade path
- Check supportability and compatibility
- Assess upgrade impact
- Schedule upgrade
Phase 2: Pre-upgrade
Before upgrading OneFS, you must complete several preupgrade tasks. If you do not complete these preupgrade tasks, there is an increased risk of failure during your upgrade.
Pre-upgrade tasks to complete:
- Collect cluster information
- Resolve events and errors
- Verify cluster configuration
- Download OneFS installation file
- Run the upgrade compatibility check utility
- Run the On-Cluster Analysis tool
- Run the HealthCheck tool
- Back up data
- Complete system jobs
- Update Node Firmware Package
- Update Drive Support Package
- Configure IPMI ports
- Enable Dell Technologies connectivity services
Phase 3: Performing the upgrade
OneFS can be upgraded in one of three ways:
- Parallel upgrades. (Recommended for OneFS 8.2.2 and later) Dell Technologies recommends using the parallel upgrade option when upgrading any size of OneFS cluster. Parallel upgrades restart groups of nodes in the OneFS cluster simultaneously, leaving the rest of the cluster available. Parallel upgrades are a fast option while still maintaining client connections.
- Simultaneous upgrades. The simultaneous upgrade option restarts all the nodes in the cluster simultaneously. Simultaneous upgrades are the fastest upgrade option, but all client connections are lost.
NOTE: As of PowerScale OneFS 9.11.0 and later versions, the rolling upgrade option is deprecated in favor of the parallel upgrade option. Refer to KB article 000273297 if there is a need for the rolling upgrade option.
Performing the upgrade tasks to complete:
- Perform the upgrade
- Commit the upgrade
- Verify the upgrade
Phase 4: Post-upgrade
After an upgrade, you should perform several restoration and change management tasks to help ensure that your cluster performs and behaves as expected.
Post-upgrade asks to complete:
- Allow upgrade jobs to finish
- Verify operational status
- Reestablish user privileges
- Restore client connections and workflows
- Verify Kerberos migration
- Restore custom settings
- Test custom scripts
