​​​​​​​NetWorker Module for Microsoft: SQL backup failing with the error "Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]

Summary: SQL backup failing as the SQL Server is not responding from the client side or stopped responding. Also, the SQL Server is unable to list the SQL database. When it is failing in NMC, it is failing with error 38008: nsrsqlsv: Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. ...

Symptoms

  • The SQL backup fails with the below error message:

38571:nsrsqlsv: Bad switch: -o

38562:nsrsqlsv: Unsupported savegrp option -o will be ignored

153887:nsrsqlsv: Microsoft SQL server documentation provides details about the following SQL Server Provider error:

38008:nsrsqlsv: Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. 

153416:nsrsqlsv: (Error: 2)

 

  • On the NetWorker Module for Microsoft (NMM) client, the nsrsqlsv log contains the details under 'C:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\applogs\nsrsqlsv.log'.

Cause

This issue is due to the VSS writers not being stable.
This issue is also due to SQL Server Services not responding properly.

Resolution

  1. On the SQL client, restart the SQL Server Service.

Windows: 

net start MSSQLSERVER

  1. Restart the NetWorker client services and check for stale processes (if any): 
  • To start or stop the NetWorker services: 
net stop nsrexecd /y && net start nsrexecd
  • To check for stale process:
tasklist | findstr nsr
  • To kill the process:
tskill <pid>
