NetWorker: Requirement for client Configuration Wizard for SQL VDI

Summary: Configuring a client resource by using the Client Backup Configuration wizard for SQL Clusters requirements checklist.

Instructions

By default, the system account that is the nsrexecd service account does not have the system administrator (sysadmin) role for the SQL server. Therefore, when configuring a client resource, set the username and password of a Windows account that can back up the SQL server.

The remote user who is assigned to the client resource must be granted the required privileges.
Assign the user to the following server roles with the Microsoft SQL Server
Studio Management (SSMS) UI:
● sysadmin
● public

Assign the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM user to the following server roles with the Microsoft SSMS UI:
● sysadmin
● public

Assign the user to the following user groups on the Windows application host on all SQL nodes:
● Backup Operators
● Administrators
NOTE: The user must be a domain user for failover cluster or availability group backups.
You can use a local user for stand-alone backups.

Named instances in failover cluster configurations
Each named SQL virtual server instance has the following qualities:
● A unique IP address, network name, and instance name
● Datafile files that are installed on a clustered drive that belongs to the same cluster group as the associated virtual server for that named instance.

To create the client resource for the SQL Cluster or named instance using the client configuration wizard in NMC, ensure that:

1- Name resolution:
Name and reverse lookup for the named instance are resolved correctly.
If DNS resolution is failing, ensure that entries are in the hosts file on the SQL Server nodes and NetWorker Server: IP FQDN Shortname

2- Check the Cluster resource details:
When we run the configuration wizard, nsrsqlra is started which in turn query the cluster resources.
Run the following command to verify
Get-ClusterResource "Instance_Name" | fl

3- SQL Instance names and versions:
nsrsqlra then check the registry to get the instance names and the SQL version of each.
Run the following commands to verify
reg query "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL"
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server"

4- Listing the saveset:
nsrsqlra spawns nsrsqlsv to list the databases.
Run the following commands to verify this:
nsrsqlsv -s <Networker_Server_name>  -z FEDERATED_SLAVE=true -?

Note: Make sure you are logged in with the same backup user account.

If Client Wizard for SQL VDI does not show any databases for SQL Virtual Instance using NMM 19.7, see:
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000217468/networker-nmm-19-7-client-wizard-for-sql-vdi-does-not-show-any-databases-for-sql-virtual-instance?lang=en

Additional Information

When configuring a federated backup of an Availability Group that is configured with multiple SQL servers instances. If one of these instances is a failover cluster instance, use the Client Properties dialog box to configure the backup.
This situation exists when there is a SQL virtual server instance in the cluster. This configuration is not available from the Client Backup Configuration wizard.

NMM does not support the Client Backup Configuration wizard to create a client resource for a clusterless availability group listener.
