PowerEdge: R940 PCIe Network Interface names in Ubuntu or RHEL differ from other 14G and 15G Servers

Symptoms

Dell servers running Ubuntu 20.04 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux display inconsistent NIC names when compared to other PowerEdge servers.


The Network Interface Controllers installed in R940's PCIe slots are all named with "enp" prefix.

On Dell R740 and R750 servers, all Network Interface Controllers installed in PCIe slots are named with "ens" prefix.

Cause

The R940 BIOS does not define the PCIe hotplug slot index numbers.

Resolution

Fix:
This issue is fixed in BIOS release 2.21.2.
After the upgrade, the PCIe NIC name will match other Dell 14G and 15G servers.
