Dell Desktop or Workstation Storage Procedure and Effects on the CMOS Battery Life
Summary: This article discusses the effects on CMOS batteries based on storage conditions, and the length of time left unboxed or not plugged into AC Power.
Symptoms
You may experience that the BIOS defaults have been restored, the Time and Date has not been set message during power-up due to the CMOS battery depletion.
Cause
AC Power retains the computers standby power to reduce the power consumption of the CMOS batteries. If left without a power connection, the battery can deplete and lower the overall expected lifespan.
Expected Storage Environment and Shelf Life for Unused Batteries:
- The computer should be stored in an environment with a temperature between -40 °C to 65 °C (-40 °F to 149 °F) and relative humidity of 5% to 95% (non-condensing). Under these conditions, the battery can meet the specification requirements within one year of storage.
- Computers should be stored away from heat sources, direct sunlight, and moisture. It is also recommended that devices be stored far from sources of static electricity.
Resolution
CMOS Battery Life
The battery has a shelf life of one year. To ensure good performance, it is recommended to use the battery within one year. If the storage time exceeds one year under standard storage conditions, it is possible that the CMOS battery depletes and not be able to retain the CMOS settings. Sometimes the CMOS battery may need to be replaced.
