Instructions

PowerFlex Management Controller (PFMC) has four upgrade scenarios:
  1. Upgrading Single-Node PowerFlex Management Node
  2. Upgrading PFMC 1.0 (vSAN)
  3. Upgrade PFMC 2.0 manually when upgrading from PowerFlex Manager version 4.0 or later
  4. Upgrade PFMC 2.0 automatically as part of the resource group when upgrading from PowerFlex Manager version 4.5 or later
 
Note: This article supports the automated upgrade scenario for PFMC 2.0 using PowerFlex Manager version 4.5 or later on Rack and Appliance. For other scenarios, see the appropriate section in the upgrade procedure found in SolVe.
 
Upgrading PFMC 2.0 automatically as part of the resource group when upgrading from PowerFlex Manager version 4.5 or later
1- Upgrade the PowerFlex Software on PowerFlex Management Controller 2.0
Use this procedure to upgrade the PowerFlex software on the PowerFlex Management Controller 2.0.
 
Prerequisites
  • MVMs are running on separate hosts.
  • VMware vCenter high availability rules and DRS are enabled and fully automated.
 
Steps
  1. Log in to PowerFlex Manager.
  2. On the menu bar, click Resources.
  3. Select the resource with the OS Hostname powerflex-mds and click Update Resources.
  4. On the Update Details page, check the Needs Attention section to see whether any of the nodes must be reconfigured before upgrade.
  5. Once the nodes are listed under Ready for Upgrade, select any PowerFlex node that you want to reconfigure. To select all PowerFlex nodes, click the check box to the left of SDS Name and click Next.
  6. On the Summary page, select Allow PowerFlex Manager to perform non-disruptive updates now and select either of the following options:
  • Instant Maintenance Mode: Select this option for PowerFlex management controller 2.0 with three PowerFlex nodes.
  • Protected Maintenance Mode: Select this option for PowerFlex management controller 2.0 with more than three PowerFlex nodes.
  1. Type UPDATE POWERFLEX to confirm the update.
  2. Click Finish > Yes.
  3. Monitor the status of PowerFlex upgrade:
    1. From the Resource tab, select the PowerFlex MDS system and click View Details.
    2. On the Upgrade Status tab, verify the PowerFlex upgrade status.
  4. Click Close.
 
2- Upgrade the PowerFlex Management Controller 2.0 Resource Group
Use this procedure to upgrade the PowerFlex Management Controller 2.0 Resource Group with the latest firmware, VMware ESXi, storage VM (SVM), and management VM (MVM)
 
Note: Starting with Compliance Versions released with PowerFlex 4.6 (IC bundles 46.375.00, 46.380.00 and RCM bundles 3.7.5.0, 3.8.0.0), the VMware ESXi ISO and depot patch files are not included Customers must procure these files and have them uploaded externally to the Compliance Version using the Added Component feature or uploaded to the OS Images in Settings to update VMware ESXi in the Resource Group.
 
Steps
  1. Log in to PowerFlex Manager.
  2. Click Lifecycle > Resource Groups.
  3. Select the resource group that represents the PowerFlex management controller 2.0.
  4. Click View Compliance Report and perform the following:
    1. Modify the current version of the compliance file to a preferred version.
    2. Select all the PowerFlex controller nodes to upgrade and click Update Resources.
    3. On the Applied Resource Updates page, select Allow PowerFlex Manager to perform firmware and software updates now and select either of the following options:
    • Instant Maintenance Mode: Select this option for PowerFlex management controller 2.0 with three nodes.
    • Protected Maintenance Mode: Select this option for PowerFlex management controller 2.0 with more than three nodes.
    1. Click Apply and Yes to confirm.
  5. Monitor the process in the Resource Group. The latest firmware, SVM OS, MVM OS, and VMware ESXi updates are applied.
  6. After the PowerFlex management controller 2.0 resource group is upgraded, verify that the service appears healthy in both status and deployment state.
