NOTE: These instructions only apply to some Latitude and Precision laptops. For all other brands of laptops, see Dell Knowledge Base article How to Download and Install the Fingerprint Reader Driver for Your Computer and Then Enroll or Remove Your Fingerprint Using Windows Hello.

 

Windows 10

You may not be able to install the fingerprint reader on your system after a clean install of Windows 10. In the Device Manager, the fingerprint reader displays the following error: "This device cannot start (code 10), The current device power state cannot support this request."

Dell Data Protection | Security Tools are not compatible with Windows 10. Instead, Windows 10 must manage the fingerprint scanner.

To resolve this behavior:

  1. Download the Dell ControlVault Driver from the Dell Support site and run the installer.
  2. Download the Dell ControlVault Firmware from the Dell Support site and run the installer.
  3. Within Windows, navigate to C:\dell\Drivers\GDFGW\firmware, double-click, and run ushupgrade.exe.
     
    NOTE: Should running ushupgrade.exe fail, double-click, and run fwupgrdtool.exe from the same folder.

After rebooting the system, Windows 10 should recognize the fingerprint scanner.
