Dell and Open Source: SAP, SUSE, Yocto, Juju/MAAS

My name is Tui Leauanae, and I am the product planning and product marketing manager for Linux solutions at Dell. I drive requirements into the Dell enterprise portfolio and ensure Linux is a foundation component within our hardware, software and services eco-system. We understand the importance of Linux as the key enabler for the applications and workloads that sit on top.

Dell’s engagement with the open source community allows us to gain expertise from our involvement. It also gives us the opportunity to insert back into the community things we’ve learned and things we’ve experienced. Following (with more to come) are a series of video blogs of the work Dell does with our open source partners and open source projects.

Dell and Open Source: SAP and SUSE

Dell, SAP and SUSE are working together to provide in-memory database solutions with SAP’s HANA Platform running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server on Dell PowerEdge server platform. Please see Chris Hallenbeck, VP of HANA Platform at SAP Americas, and Michael Miller, VP of Global Alliances and Product Marketing at SUSE, provide their perspective on HANA. Additionally, please see Dell’s perspective with Divyesh Vaidya, HANA Product Manager, and Nate Saunders, SAP Alliance Manager.

Dell and Open Source: SUSE

Dell and SUSE have been partners for over a decade. Today, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is validated, tested and supported on our enterprise portfolio, including server, storage, networking and systems management. Our teams work across departments from operations to sales to engineering and to marketing.

Please see Dell and SUSE perspectives from Michael Miller, VP of Global Alliances and Product Marketing at SUSE and Alan Clark, Director of Industry Initiatives at SUSE as well as having roles as the OpenStack Foundation Chairperson and a board member on the Linux Foundation. See also perspectives from Bharath Vasudevan, Global Alliance Director at Dell, Phillip Cockrell, Sr. Director of Alliances at SUSE and Michael Cote, Director of Research for Infrastructure Software at 451 Research.

Dell and SUSE engineering teams work closely together and collaborate on ensuring validated configurations and enterprise solutions are optimized for mission critical workloads to help, for instance, on UNIX to Linux migrations. Additionally, our teams collaborate on ensuring cloud technologies and embedded systems are easily deployed and that the benefits of Linux are functional in a customer environment.

Dell and Open Source: Yocto

Dell is a member of the Linux Foundation and engaged with the Yocto Project. This group focuses on making the embedded Linux eco-system more streamlined, development cycles more collaborative, and deployment tools easier to use. Michael Brown, Linux Principal Engineer, provides his open source expertise to the Yocto project and also works closely with our Dell hardware embedded teams to increase their development efficiency.

Dell and Open Source: Juju and MAAS

Instantly deploy, integrate and scale software services on top of Dell PowerEdge servers using Ubuntu Juju Charms, a tool that allows customers to automate their cloud infrastructure. Juju helps customers to deploy software services to Dell hardware using Ubuntu MAAS (Metal-as-a-Service). Jose De La Rosa, Dell Linux Engineering Lead, and Kent Baxley, onsite Canonical Ubuntu Linux Engineer, explain in detail what Juju and MAAS can do together in the white paper below.
