CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
1. Before upgrading your system, download the latest system BIOS version from support.dell.com and follow the instructions included in the compressed download file to install the update on your system.
NOTE: You can update the system BIOS using the Lifecycle Controller.
2. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet. When disconnected from the power source, press and hold the power button for three seconds to fully drain the system of stored power prior to removing the cover.
3. Open the system.
4. Remove the cooling shroud.
WARNING: The heat sink and processor are hot to the touch for some time after the system has been powered down. Allow the heat sink and processor to cool before handling them.
CAUTION: Never remove the heat sink from a processor unless you intend to remove the processor. The heat sink is necessary to maintain proper thermal conditions.
5. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, loosen one of the heat-sink retention sockets. Wait 30 seconds for the heat sink to loosen from the processor.
6. Loosen the second heat-sink retention socket.
7. Lift the heat sink away from the processor and set the heat sink aside.
8. Position your thumb firmly over the processor socket-release lever near the unlock icon unlock icon and release the lever from the locked position by pushing down and out from under the tab.
9. Similarly, position your thumb firmly over the processor socket-release lever near the lock icon lock icon and release the lever from the locked position by pushing down and out from under the tab. Rotate the lever 90 degrees upward.
10. Rotate the processor shield upward and out of the way.
CAUTION: The socket pins are fragile and can be permanently damaged. Be careful not to bend the pins in the socket when removing the processor out of the socket.
11. Lift the processor out of the socket and leave the release lever up so that the socket is ready for the new processor.
NOTE: If you are permanently removing a processor, you must install a processor/DIMM blank in the vacant socket to ensure proper system cooling. The processor/DIMM blank covers the vacant sockets for the DIMMs and the processor.
Installing processor:
1. Remove the heat sink/heat-sink blank and processor/processor blank, as applicable.
NOTE: The procedure to remove the heat-sink blank or processor blank is similar to removing a heat-sink or processor.
2. Unpack the new processor.
3. Align the processor with the socket keys on the ZIF socket.
With the release levers on the processor socket in the open position, align pin 1 of the processor, using pin 1 position 4. guide on the socket, as reference and set the processor lightly in the socket.
5. Close the processor shield.
6. Rotate the socket-release lever near the lock icon lock icon until it is locked in position.
7. Similarly, rotate the socket-release lever near the unlock icon unlock icon until it is locked in position.
8. Using a clean lint-free cloth, remove the thermal grease from the heat sink.
9. Open the grease applicator included with your processor kit and apply all of the thermal grease in the applicator to the center of the topside of the new processor.
10. Place the heat sink on the processor.
11. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, tighten the heat-sink retention sockets.
12. Install the cooling shroud.
13. Close the system.
14. Reconnect your system and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn on the system.
15. Press <F2> to enter the System Setup and check that the processor information matches the new system configuration.
16. Run the system diagnostics to verify that the new processor operates correctly.
