NetWorker: Tape operations fails with the error: read open error: command completed successfully (drive status is MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED)

Summary: During tape labeling or mounting operations in NetWorker, the process may fail with the error message: Read open error: command completed successfully (drive status is MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED). This indicates a problem with the tape drive loading or ejecting the media, often caused by hardware or tape media issues. ...

Symptoms

  • Labeling or mounting tape volumes fail with the error message:
read open error: command completed successfully (drive status is MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED)

  • Daemon logs (daemon.raw) display the following warnings and errors during labeling or mounting operations:
NSR info media warning: <device_name> opening: MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED
nsrd NSR info media warning: <device_name> moving: read open error: command completed successfully (drive status is MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED)
nsrd NSR warning Status update: operation 'SNMD_DEVOP_DEACTIVATE', instance '356', on device '<device_name>' has completed abnormally with status 'DEV_OP_ERROR'.
  • Tape drive status check using the mt command shows data errors, indicating possible hardware or media issues:

    mt -f <device_name> status
    <device_name>:
Current Status: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

  • Operating system logs report warnings related to media load or eject failures on the tape device, such as:
NetWorker media: (warning) rd=dcp-nwsn1.rnp.local:\\.\Tape4 opening: MEDIA LOAD OR EJECT FAILED

Cause

As the error suggest, Hardware (tape drive) or tape media problem.

Resolution

Verify if the problem is with a specific tape drive or control path by swapping drives. The hardware vendor can provide better assistance on how to deal with this situation.
