Avamar 18.1.0 is able to let end user perform file level recoveries via new HTML5 UI without Backup/Restore or VMware administrator's intervention.

This KB article is intended for DELL EMC employees, partners, and customers with an interest in FLR / End user recovery and Avamar solution.
Readers should be already familiar with Avamar and VMware technologies.

INTRODUCTION TO END USER FILE LEVEL RECOVERIES
ABOUT
Avamar end users would like to perform file level recoveries, previous releases this can only be done by administrator. We are provider new HTML5 UI to support end users file level recovery.
Features as:
  • Windows AD/Local User SID Collector to collect end user's SID and group SIDs.
  • FLR Browse Service to provide folder structure browsing and file enumeration and file search capabilities.
  • Support 50k files browsing   Use tree view to lazy load folder structure.
  • Use pagination list to display folder & file items in user selected folder.
  • Add search function to help user quick find files in a large folder.
  • Add a new file selection confirm page to let user can view his selected file clearly. Please note previous release we have admin role (vCenter user) login, from 18.1 release, this part integrate into AUI (administrator Web UI).

WORKFLOW
The Restore Client, accessed through a web browser, allows you to select specific virtual machine (VM) backups as file systems and then browse the file system to locate the directories and files you want to restore.

The following sections provide more information on FLR:
  1. End user login via web browser at https://<Avamar IP>/flr.
  2. Enter local user s login credentials.
  3. Two options available: Login from original VM or alternative VM.
  4. Login from alternative VM need input VM IP or FQDN.
  5. Authentication and login.
  6. Select backup.
  7. Browse and locate the directories and files you want to restore.
  8. Browse and location the target destination in original VM.
  9. Start restore.
  10. Back to first screen continue for next restore.
LIMITATIONS
  1. You can only restore files and/or folders from a Windows backup to a Windows machine, or from a Linux backup to a Linux machine.
  2. You must install VMware Tools to use FLR. For best results, ensure that all VMs run the latest available version of VMware Tools. Older versions are known to cause failures when browsing during the file-level restore operation.
  3. All VMs must belong to the vCenter dedicated to Backup and Recovery. Multiple vCenters are not supported.
CONCLUTION
Avamar 18.1.0 provides a solution for end user to perform file level recovery on demand.
