Symptoms
- Multiple VM backups performed through the NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) vProxy appliance are failing due to snapshot errors:
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ ERROR: Snapshot creation task failed: There are currently 3 usable fault domains. The operation requires 1 more usable fault domains.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ ERROR: Unable to create quiesced snapshot: There are currently 3 usable fault domains. The operation requires 1 more usable fault domains.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ NOTICE: Snapshot free space threshold validation not requested.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ WARN: Retrying as a non-quiesced snapshot: Unable to create quiesced snapshot: There are currently 3 usable fault domains. The operation requires 1 more usable fault domains.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ INFO: Task to create snapshot completed, errors = true.
YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SSZ ERROR: Unable to create non-quiesced snapshot after a retry attempt: There are currently 3 usable fault domains. The operation requires 1 more usable fault domains.
NOTE: The number of fault domains usable and the number reported as required may vary depending on the vSAN configuration.
- Manual snapshot creation also fails with the same error when attempting to create them using VMware Snapshot Manager.
Cause
As per the following VMware KB, the issue is caused because of an insufficient number of Fault Domains currently present in the environment.
Resolution
Engage with VMware administrators (or VMware Support) to resolve the VMware fault domain configuration issue. There are no actions that can be taken through NetWorker or vProxy configuration to resolve this issue.
