Symptoms

The Dell Universal Dock (UD22) does not supply enough power to turn on your laptop

When the battery power of a laptop is low, an external power supply is required to use the laptop. You must use a larger AC adapter if the power consumption of the laptop is greater than the power supplied by the UD22 (96 W) dock.

The laptop may not be able to boot from a shutdown state if the laptop does not obtain sufficient power from the dock. It may be forced into hibernation from the operating system.

Note: Some laptops require 130 W or more. However, the Smart power delivery (PD) function provides the maximum power output of 96 W.

Cause

The UD22 dock ONLY provides 60 W at the port supplying power to the laptop when it is fully loaded. The laptop may not be able to boot if the battery cannot supply additional power.

Resolution

Note: The dock is working as designed. This is the expected behavior of the dock in this situation.

You may require an additional AC adapter if the laptop requires more than 96 W to turn on. (Or requires more than 60 W when the dock is fully loaded.)

You may have to connect the laptops AC adapter to the laptop in addition to the docking cable.

Note: You can quickly check the recommended AC adapter capacity for your model of Dell laptop by checking the AC adapter specification listed in your service manual. You can search for your model's manual on the following link:
