This article explains the different possible causes and the relevant solutions for these error alerts. Alert Text Interconnect module link is down.
Error Code 0x0030E703
Impact When an interconnect module link is down, the connection between two nodes within the appliance is lost. This prevents critical communication between nodes required for cluster coordination and data synchronization. The affected node may enter service mode, which can lead to service degradation.
Resolution  Cause:

Hardware failure: The interconnect module's transceiver, port, or internal components may have failed, preventing link establishment.

Physical connection issue: The interconnect module may have become loose or lost proper connection with the chassis or peer module.

Signal integrity issue: Electromagnetic interference, signal degradation, or poor signal quality can cause the link to drop.

Firmware or software issue: Firmware corruption, driver issues, or software errors may prevent the link from being established or maintained.

Configuration error: Incorrect speed, duplex, or other configuration settings may prevent proper link negotiation.

Peer module issue: The peer interconnect module on the other end of the link may have failed or is not functioning properly.



Solution:

To resolve the link down/link degraded issue, perform the following steps in order:

Reboot the node

  • Reboot the affected node to attempt automatic recovery of the interconnect module
  • After the reboot completes, verify if the link speed has returned to the expected rate

Reseat the interconnect module

  • If the reboot does not resolve the issue, power down the node following proper shutdown procedures
  • Remove the failed interconnect module from the node
  • Inspect the module and chassis connectors for any visible damage, debris, or signs of overheating
  • Reinstall the interconnect module firmly to ensure proper connection
  • Power on the node and verify if the module recovers

Reseat the node

  • If the reseat of the interconnect module does not resolve the issue, power down the node following proper shutdown procedures
  • Remove the node from the chassis
  • Inspect the node and chassis connectors for any visible damage, debris, or connection issues
  • Reinstall the node firmly to ensure proper connection
  • Power on the node and verify if the link speed has recovered to the expected rate

Replace the interconnect module

  • If the link remains down or link speed remains degraded, the interconnect module is likely defective and requires replacement
  • Follow hardware replacement procedures to install a new module
  • Verify the new module operates at the expected link speed and functions as expected

Error Code 0x0030E702
Impact When an interconnect module link speed is degraded, the data transfer rate between nodes is reduced below the expected performance level. This limits the available bandwidth for inter-node communication, potentially causing bottlenecks and increased latency for cluster operations. The system may experience degraded performance for data-intensive operations, and overall cluster throughput is reduced. The degraded link may still function but at suboptimal speed, affecting the efficiency of data synchronization and coordination between nodes.
Resolution  Cause:

Signal integrity issue: Electromagnetic interference, signal degradation, or poor signal quality can cause the link to negotiate a lower speed than the maximum supported rate.

Physical connection issue: Loose or poor connection between the interconnect module and the chassis or peer module can cause signal loss and speed degradation.

Hardware degradation: The interconnect module's transceiver or port components may degrade over time, reducing performance capabilities.

Firmware or driver issue: Firmware bugs, driver issues, or software errors may prevent the link from negotiating or maintaining the optimal speed.

Peer module limitation: The peer interconnect module on the other end of the link may have limitations that force a lower negotiated speed.

Auto-negotiation failure: Failure of auto-negotiation between the modules may result in a fallback to a lower speed.

Configuration mismatch: Incorrect speed or duplex settings may cause the link to operate at a reduced speed.



Solution:

To resolve the link down/link degraded issue, perform the following steps in order:

Reboot the node

  • Reboot the affected node to attempt automatic recovery of the interconnect module
  • After the reboot completes, verify if the link speed has returned to the expected rate
