Creating a CloudWatch alarm

Create a CloudWatch alarm to monitor Cyber Recovery metrics.

Prerequisites

To monitor memory and disk use metrics, install the CloudWatch agent before creating an alarm.

About this task

You do not need to install the CloudWatch agent to monitor and create an alarm for host status and CPU metrics.

Steps

  1. In the AWS Management Console, go to the CloudWatch service and locate Alarms.
  2. Click All alarms and then in the Alarms page, click Create alarm.
The first step of the Create alarm wizard is displayed.
  3. Under Metric in the Specify metric and conditions page, click Select metric.
  4. To select the integrated EC2 host status and CPU use metrics:
    1. Under AWS Namespaces, click EC2 > Per-Instance Metrics.
    2. Select the instance associated with the appropriate metric name.
    3. Click Select metric.

The Cyber Recovery instance metric names include:

    • StatusCheckFailed
    • CPUUtilization
The Specify metric and conditions page of the Create alarm wizard is displayed.
  5. To select the CloudWatch disk and memory use metrics:
    1. Under Custom Namespace, click CWAgent.
    2. Select the first option (ImageId, InstanceId, InstanceType, device, fstype, path) for disk use metrics or the third option (ImageId, InstanceId, InstanceType) for memory use metrics.
    3. Select the instance on the root path that is associated with the appropriate metric name.
    4. Click Select metric.

The Cyber Recovery instance metric names include:

    • Disk_used_percent
    • Mem_used_percent
The Specify metric and conditions page of the Create alarm wizard is displayed. This page includes a graph that shows the configured data points.
  6. In the section with the graph, leave the default values in the fields to the right.
  7. Under Conditions, set the following values and then click Next:
    1. Set the Threshold type field to Static.
    2. For the host status metric, set the Define the alarm condition to Greater. Otherwise, go to the next substep.
    3. For the other metrics, set the Define the alarm condition to Greater/Equal.
    4. For the host status metric, type 0 in the Define the threshold value field. Otherwise, go to the next substep.
    5. For the other metrics, type 80 in the Define the threshold value field to set the percentage used to trigger an alarm.
The Configure actions page is displayed.
  8. Under Notification, set the following values and then click Next.
    1. For Alarm state trigger, select In alarm.
    2. For Select an SNS topic, either select an existing topic or create a new topic.

      To create a new topic:

      1. Under Select an SNS topic, select Create new topic.
      2. Type a topic name.
      3. In the Email endpoints that will receive the notification field, type a valid email address to receive notifications.
      4. Click Create topic.
When you click Next, the Add name and description page is displayed.
  9. Under Name and description, do the following and then click Next:
    1. Provide an Alarm name, for example, PPCR StatusCheckFailed Alarm.
    2. Optionally, provide a meaningful description for the alarm.
The Preview and create alarm window is displayed.
  10. In the Preview and create alarm, review the alarm and click Create alarm.
The alarm is created and is displayed in the CloudWatch Alarms page.
  11. Repeat these steps to create an alarm for another metric or instance that you want to monitor.
