Applying security patches in the Cyber Recovery vault

Move patch software from your production system into the Cyber Recovery vault securely. Then apply software patches to update the Cyber Recovery management host and DD systems, as well as applications such as NetWorker, Avamar, PowerProtect Data Manager, CyberSense, and so on.

Prerequisites

  • On the production DD system, create a dedicated MTree.
  • On the production and Cyber Recovery vault DD systems, create and initialize a DD replication.
  • On the Cyber Recovery system, create a Cyber Recovery policy and select the replication context that is associated with the patch software.
  • Optionally, for a Cyber Recovery virtual appliance, back up data on and take a VM snapshot of the Cyber Recovery virtual appliance. Then, save the backup data and snapshot outside of the Cyber Recovery virtual appliance.

About this task

To update vault components, follow these steps if you do not have physical access to the physical Cyber Recovery vault or do not want to take a laptop or external storage into the physical Cyber Recovery vault.

NOTE:
  • These steps describe how to apply a software patch to the Cyber Recovery host. Use these steps to apply a software patch to other systems in the Cyber Recovery vault.
  • Ensure that you reboot the virtual appliance after you complete the following steps.

Steps

  1. Go to Dell Online Support to obtain the cyber-recovery-osupdate-<current release>.bin file.
  2. In the production environment, place the patch software on a host.
  3. On the production DD system, export the dedicated MTree to that host.
  4. From that host, NFS mount the production MTree.
  5. Download the patch software to the NFS location from that host.
  6. Perform a checksum and run a scanner to ensure that the downloaded patch software is uncorrupted.
  7. Optionally, test the software update on a test system.
  8. On the Cyber Recovery system, perform a Sync Copy operation to replicate the MTree on which the patch software resides.
  9. After the Sync Copy job completes, create a Cyber Recovery sandbox of the copy and export it to the host on which you want to access the patch software.
  10. Optionally, do either of the following:
    • Run a scanner to ensure that the downloaded copy of the software patch is uncorrupted.
    • Perform an analysis by using the CyberSense.
  11. From the CRCLI, run the crsetup.sh --save command to create a backup copy.
  12. Copy the software patch to the Cyber Recovery management host to a directory of your choice.
  13. From the CLI, run the following command:
    # ./cyber-recovery-osupdate-<current release>.bin
  14. For the Cyber Recovery virtual appliance, reboot the virtual appliance.
NOTE: You must reboot the virtual appliance, otherwise, you might encounter problems.
