Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 User's Guide

Easy Restore

Easy Restore uses the Easy Restore flash memory to back up the data. When you replace the motherboard and power on the system, the BIOS queries the iDRAC and prompts you to restore the backed-up data. The first BIOS screen prompts you to restore the Service Tag, licenses, and UEFI diagnostic application. The second BIOS screen prompts you to restore system configuration settings. If you choose not to restore data on the first BIOS screen and do not set the Service Tag by another method, then the first BIOS screen is displayed again. The second BIOS screen is displayed only once.

NOTE:
  • System configurations settings are backed-up only when Collect System Inventory On Reboot (CSIOR) is enabled. Ensure that Lifecycle Controller and CSIOR are enabled.
  • System Erase does not clear the data from the Easy Restore flash memory.
  • Once you perform System Erase, SDPM Default Memory Size is configured to 32 GB. You can see SPDM Default Memory Size attribute by going to GUIConfigurationBios SettingsMemory SettingsPersistent MemorySoftware Defined Persistent Memory.
  • Easy Restore does not back up other data such as firmware images, vFlash data, or add-in cards data.
  • You cannot perform system erase when iDRAC is in iLKM mode. Disable iLKM to perform system erase.
NOTE: While replacing motherboard, you have to manually choose Liquid cooled or Air cooled. Incorrect selection of these options leads to thermal issues in the platform and in such case reach out to Dell Tech Support for the recovery.

After you replace the system board on your server, Easy Restore allows you to automatically restore the following data:

  • System Service Tag
  • Asset Tag
  • Licenses data
  • UEFI Diagnostics application
  • System configuration settings—BIOS, iDRAC, and NIC
NOTE:In servers with iDRAC release 3.00.00.00 and above, Easy Restore automatically proceeds in 5 minutes if there is no user interaction.
Following are the time duration details that are required for some restoring actions:
  • Restoring system contents like Diagnostics, System Event Log (SEL), and OEM ID Module typically takes less than a minute.
  • Restoring system configuration data (iDRAC, BIOS, NIC) may take several minutes (sometimes around 10 min) to complete.
NOTE:During this time, there is no indication or progress bar and server might be rebooted couple of times to finish restoring the configuration.
