Small Businesses find cost savings through telephone solutions

Thinking of ways to cut costs and reduce overhead in your small business? I know when I had my business; I was always looking for a way to save a buck. One of the areas I always felt was too expensive was telephone service.

In the past, the phone company was the only place you could get services and equipment. Later, the large phone companies were broken down into smaller companies, thus more and more technology became available to the small business owner at a fraction of the previous costs. Utilizing these smaller companies, I was able to equip my business with a multi-line, multi-station telephone system for a lot less than was available from the big guys. Not too long after, these smaller companies began to offer lower telephone rates, and a complete package of equipment and services – reasonably priced and tailored for small businesses – was born.

Fast forward to today – Now, almost all communications, from cell phones to television, are digital. Telephone service is one of the areas that have been revolutionized by computer technology. Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a term for the transmission of voice communications over the Internet. So, in plain English, when you make a phone call, the analog signal is converted to a digital signal using an analog telephony adapter (ata), then it is sent over the Internet using a computer or modem, and it is converted back to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter.

Advantages of VoIP
Some VoIP services offer features and services like call waiting, call forwarding, voicemail or three-way calling, which may not available with a traditional phone, or are available but for additional fees. Utilizing a VOIP, you may also be able to avoid paying for both a broadband connection and a traditional telephone line.

Disadvantages of VoIP
If you're considering replacing your traditional telephone service with VoIP, there are some possible differences to be aware of:

· Some VoIP services do not work during power outages and the service provider may not offer backup power.

· Not all VoIP services connect directly to emergency services through 9-1-1.

· VoIP providers may or may not offer directory assistance or white/yellow page listings.
