Avamar: How to change the password on an NDMP Accelerator node

Summary: This article describes how to change the root/admin password on the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) accelerator node.

Symptoms

Use standard Linux/UNIX procedures to change passwords on NDMP accelerators.

Security scanners may identify the passwords on the Avamar NDMP accelerator as needing changed.
A good security procedure suggests changing the root password periodically.

Cause

The root password must be changed.

Resolution

To change the admin or root password in the Avamar NDMP node, there are two options.

  1. If the accelerator node is found in the Avamar server probe.xml file, follow the standard method for changing passwords on an Avamar server. See the 'change-passwords' section in the Avamar Administrator Guide.
  2. If the accelerator node is not found in the Avamar server probe.xml file, the standard Linux/UNIX passwd command may be used.
root@accelerator:~/#: /usr/local/avamar/bin/passwd root
Changing password for user root.
New UNIX password:

When prompted supply the password

NOTE:
It is a good idea to have a second putty session to the Avamar NDMP accelerator
logged in as root.

Attempt to login to root on the terminal you changed the password on.  NOT on the second putty session to the NDMP accelerator.  If the new password works, you are done.
If it fails, you have the second putty session open with root user so you can change the password for root again.  Don't use this terminal to test your login.

Additional Information

To check if the accelerator node is found in the Avamar server probe file, on the utility node run "nodedb print".

The following example shows a single node server with no accelerator node in probe.xml:

admin@utility:~/>: nodedb print
<dpn>
  <module name="utility" userinput_domain="default" userinput_pns="x.x.18.199" userinput_sns="x.x.19.30" userinput_search="default" userinput_gateway="x.x.18.1">
    <node type="single-node server" userinput_gateway="x.x.18.1">
      <network-interface id="0" userinput_bonded="eth0,eth2" userinput_ifname="bond0">
        <address value="x.x.18.165" userinput_netmask="255.255.255.0" newuserinput_value="x.x.18.165" userinput_customhostname="utility.emcvmw.ctc"/>
        <uses allow="replication,backup,management,internal"/>
      </network-interface>
    </node>
  </module>
</dpn>
