Data Domain DD6410, 9410, 9910: Uncorrectable Memory Errors, BIOS Version Before 2.5.4

Summary: PowerProtect Data Domain systems shipped before March 2025 may be affected by a defect in Intel’s Memory Reference Code, leading to elevated rates of Uncorrectable Memory Errors.

Symptoms

  • Increased rates of Uncorrectable Memory Errors
  • MEM7114 - Memory events logged in SEL/LC log
MEM7114 - A critical diagnostic event occurred in the memory device at arg1. Contact your service provider for assistance in replacing the device.

Arg1 is the affected DIMM slot number.

Affected platforms:

  • DD6410 
  • DD9410
  • DD9910
  • Running BIOS before 2.5.4

Cause

A defect in Intel’s Memory Reference Code, leads to elevated rates of Uncorrectable Memory Errors on certain DIMMs.

The defect resides in BIOS versions before 2.5.4, which was released in March 2025. BIOS 2.5.4 includes updated Intel Memory Reference Code that resolves the issue.

Resolution

Customers can resolve this issue by upgrading to a DDOS version that includes BIOS 2.5.4 or later. BIOS updates are bundled with DDOS releases and are customer-installable.

Recommended DDOS Versions

  • DDOS 8.4.0.0-1166200
  • DDOS 8.3.1.10-1192561
  • Or any later DDOS version

Note: There is no separate BIOS upgrade process. BIOS updates are automatically applied during the DDOS upgrade.

Upgrade Instructions

  1. Verify Current DDOS Version:
    • Run CLI command: # system show version
    • Check system BIOS version using CLI command # enclosure show all
      • Check the Device VPD FW Information section of that output to get the BIOS version, for example:

 HW VPD info  

  • Confirm that the BIOS version is below 2.5.4
 
Note: The screenshot example is NOT affected as it is running a version later than 2.5.4 (that is, 2.19.1)

  3. Post-Upgrade Validation:
    • Confirm BIOS version using CLI command # enclosure show all 1
    • Monitor system logs for memory error events.
