SC Storage Customer Notification: Dell Storage Manager Incorrectly Reporting Active Space On Disk
Summary: There is a display issue where Dell Storage Manager may report Active Space On Disk as being much larger than the Total Disk Space.
Symptoms
A space reporting issue has been identified where Dell Storage Manager (DSM) may report the Active Space On Disk incorrectly. In some instances, the Active Space On Disk is well above the Total Disk Space.
When highlighting a volume in DSM, when reporting correctly, the Total Disk Space should be the sum of Active Space On Disk plus Snapshot Overhead On Disk and RAID Overhead. The Total Disk Space should also be 100%.
Illustration #1 below of DSM reporting the space correctly.
Illustration #2 below shows an example of the reporting issue where the Active Space On Disk is much higher than the Total Disk Space.
Cause:
The cause of this issue is related to SCSI Unmap and how the Storage Center calculated the returned Space.
Affected Versions:
This issue is seen on both DSM 2016 and 2018 where Storage Center systems are running SCOS Versions 7.1.1 through 7.1.20 and SCOS Versions 7.2.1 through 7.2.21.
Resolution
Workaround:
Reset the lead controller to temporarily resolve this issue. The display issue will return as more SCSI Unmap commands are ran against volumes on the Storage Center system.
Resolution:
The following SCOS versions provide permanent resolution to the display issue in DSM:
In the 7.1.x branch - 7.1.30
In the 7.2.x branch - 7.2.30 or greater
7.3.1 or greater
