Symptoms
The PowerProtect Transparent Snapshot Data Mover (TSDM) solution is used to protect the vSphere environment. The virtual machine (VM) scheduled backups complete successfully, but the manual backups intermittently fail with ABV0006. There are no independent disks configured on the affected VMs.
ABV0006: VM Direct engine 'my-vmdirect-engine.mydomain.com' is unable to back up the virtual machine 'my-vm-name' on vCenter 'my-vcenter'. Protection of this virtual machine by the VM Direct engine cannot be completed because the backup was unsuccessful. Review the error details and summary log in the Jobs window, or review the log files at /var/log/brs/vmdm for more detailed information to troubleshoot the issue. Read Less Unable to configure protection for the asset because independent disks are not supported.
Cause
The affected VM was also running a PowerProtect File Level Recover (FLR) operation when the manual backup started. By design, the FLR creates an independent hard disk for the mount operation that is made available to run the restore. The FLR removes the independent hard disk at the end of the recover.
Resolution
Ensure that PowerProtect File Level Recover (FLR) operations are not running during the scheduled backup windows or when performing manual backups.
