PowerEdge: Open Server Manager Services Exit Warning Events During Controller Reboot

Summary: Dell Open Server Manager (OSM) may record warning events indicating Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) services did not exit gracefully during an OSM reboot.

Symptoms

During OSM reboot, the Event Logs may record 'warning' events indicating that internal services did not shut down gracefully. These events lead to the health rollup status to change to 'warning' status until event logs are deleted. OSM reboots include manual user-initiated reboots or OSM firmware updates.

The following services have all periodically recorded this event during OSM reboot:
bmcweb.service
ddd.service
dpmgmt.service
fand.service
force-reboot.service
phosphor-ipmi-host.service
platd.service
thermald.service
xyz.openbmc_project.Backplane.service
xyz.openbmc_project.cfgval.service
Note: Other services may exhibit this error warning event during OSM reboot.

}

Cause

OSM reboot continues to hard shutdown the BMC even if a service does not exit within the allotted timeout window. When this occurs, the event is recorded to the BMC event log.

Resolution

Dell Open Server Manager is the Dell implementation of OpenBMC on PowerEdge servers. The OpenBMC project is a Linux Foundation open-source project to produce an implementation of the Baseboard Management Controller's (BMC) Firmware Stack. Improvements to upstream open source code and Dell proprietary code will continue to improve on these sightings as the product matures.

If these events are only occurring during OSM reboot cycles, the events can be safely ignored. In order to restore the health rollup status, the event must be deleted.
