Avamar: BMR - BMR failing with error "no matching backups selected"
Summary: This article describes a common Bare Metal Recovery (BMR) error that users encounter due to a missing backup or VSS option for which BMR is not possible.

Symptoms
The BMR process fails with the following errors:

2018-03-08 12:18:40 avtar Info <5200>: No matching backups found. 2018-03-08 12:18:40 avtar Info <5314>: Command failed (exit code 10027: no matching backups selected)
Cause
Follow steps to confirm the exitance of a valid VSS backup that can be used for BMR.
The above VSS backup is not a valid backup for a BMR System state restore.
- Confirm that there is a valid VSS backup for BMR on this client from the Avamar UI
- Navigate to the client's Restore tab.
- Find that there is no Windows VSS backups listed
- If there is a Windows VSS plug-in backup taken but when browsing through the backup, the contents of the backup looks like below:
The above VSS backup is not a valid backup for a BMR System state restore.
Resolution
To perform a BMR backup, select the option below.
The valid BMR backup must be a Windows VSS backup containing the ASR component as seen below:
- "Create Disaster Recovery Backup" to run a Windows VSS backup valid for BMR:

Additional Information
According to this KB, the option was not properly selected to restore the system state for the client.
An option would be to restore files and directories as file system structure and datafile from the Avamar UI directly or restore Active directory.
