Cisco: cannot edit device alaises in the interfaces/host enclosure table display in DCNM

Symptoms

Editing device aliases under enclosure table instead of the device alias editor in DCNM 7.2.3

Symptom 1. customer tried to rename an auto populated device alias in the end devices window ( storage ports tab). when they rename the auto populated device alias next to the enclosure name, they hit enter and DCNM throws the  following error:

switchname: device-alias : Device Alias not present

 Symptom 2. Sometimes if the customer blanks the auto populated alias, they can save and then add the needed alias, if the auto populated alias does not re-appear after being removed.

Symptom 3. AutoAlias feature is enabled in DCNM server.properties.

Cause

Cisco Bug id CSCvd07109 - Can not modify the autoalias entries in enclosure table

Symptom:
Can not modify the autoalias entries in enclosure table from SAN Client.

Conditions:
fabric.autoAlias entry under the Server Properties is set to True and auto alias entries are already populated in enclosure table.

Resolution



Workaround:

Option 1:

Navigate to the device alias editorr in DCNM to edit device aliases:

SAN GUI client -> Physical Attributes -> End Devices -> Device Alias

Option 2:

Modify the "server.properties" file and change "fabric.autoalias" to false as follows:

1. Remove the 'fabric' from DCNM
2. Stop DCNM services
3. Modify server.properties file, and set "fabric.autoalias" from "true" to "false"
4. Start DCNM services
5. Login DCNM SAN Client and rediscover the 'fabric'

Fix:

 To be fixed in a future version of DCNM above 10.1(2)
