Transferring files to the Cyber Recovery vault jump host

Use Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to copy files on to the Cyber Recovery vault jump host. You use this procedure to transfer a browser executable file, the CloudWatch agent, and other files to the jump host.

Prerequisites

  • The Cyber Recovery solution is successfully installed on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • A stand-alone or offline browser installer executable, the CloudWatch agent, or other files are downloaded to your local workstation.
NOTE:If you are installing a browser, do not download the default installer. During installation, most web browsers access the latest packages over the Internet. You cannot perform this action from the jump host.

About this task

The jump host, which the CloudFormation template installs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of the Cyber Recovery deployment, comes with the Internet Explorer browser installed. Optionally, you can manually install a different browser, such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox, for the Cyber Recovery deployment on AWS.

The jump host that is used in an AWS deployment is a CIS-hardened Windows host. By default, this hardened host does not allow file transfers using RDP; it only allows text transfers. In the following procedure, steps 1 through 6 remove this restriction by editing the registry on the jump host. After a reboot, you can copy files using RDP.

Steps

  1. Use RDP to log in to the jump host on AWS.
  2. Open a PowerShell session with admin privileges.
  3. If necessary, copy the Cyber Recovery key pair to the jump host.
If you did not delete the key pair that was used for the Cyber Recovery solution deployment, ignore this step. Otherwise, copy the key pair to the jump host again.
  4. Use SCP to copy the aws-cis-regedit registry edit program to a local directory:
    scp -i <keypair> ec2-user@<cr_host_ip>:/home/ec2-user/aws_cr/aws-cis-regedit.exe C:/Users/Administrator/Desktop
  5. From the PowerShell session, enable file transfers over RDP:
    1. Run .\aws-cis-regedit.exe enableFileTransfer.
    2. Press Enter to confirm the command and acknowledge the reboot.
      The jump host reboots automatically.
  6. After the reboot, use RDP to log in to the jump host.
You can now use RDP to copy and paste files to the jump host.
  7. Copy and paste the files to the jump host.
    1. If you are installing a browser, install the browser executable and then verify that the browser is operational. Otherwise, go to the next substep.
    2. After you complete the file transfers, secure the jump host by disabling file transfers over RDP, as described in the following steps.
  8. Open a PowerShell session with admin privileges.
  9. From the PowerShell session, disable file transfers over RDP:
    1. Run .\aws-cis-regedit.exe disableFileTransfer.
    2. Press Enter to confirm the command and acknowledge the reboot.
      The jump host reboots automatically.
  10. After the reboot, use RDP to log in to the jump host.
  11. Delete the aws-cis-regedit registry edit program.
  12. Optionally, delete the key pair if they are no longer required.
As best practice, we recommend that you delete key pairs when you no longer need them.
  13. Empty the Recycle Bin.
