What do VDI, stock-car racing and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all have in common?

One of the great things about building integrated solutions at Dell is we get the opportunity to leverage, integrate and optimize the very latest compute, storage and network technologies. A perfect example of this is our Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions (DVS) Simplified Appliance. The DVS Simplified Appliance is a simple, practical VDI solution. The appliance consolidates pre-configured server hardware with factory-installed Citrix VDI-in-a-Box software and XenServer hypervisor and is backed by world class Dell ProSupport to drive down costs and simplify implementation. But what does VDI have to do with NASCAR stock car racing and Dale Earnhardt Jr.? Well read on!

Today we are excited to introduce our DVS Simplified Appliance – NOW powered by Dell’s 12th generation PowerEdge R720 server. With this evolution of the DVS Simplified Appliance – you can now support up to 66% more users per appliance1 and we are still able to bring this solution to you for LESS THAN $500 per user!2

The Dell PowerEdge family of servers is engineered with the right combination of features and performance scalability to handle tough workloads for both large and small data center environments. The PowerEdge R720 rack server has been designed to excel at running virtualization environments like VDI – so it is an natural choice to use as the engine in our the DVS Simplified Appliance. The R720 provides an excellent base on which we have designed and optimized the DVS Simplified Appliance.

How do we do this? I sometimes like to use a NASCAR automobile racing analogy that goes something like this:

If you know NASCAR stock-car racing, you know Dale Earnhardt Jr. and the Earnhardt racing legacy (visit www.dalejr.com to learn more). Apologies to our friends in Europe and Asia for this overly US-based analogy … a similar analogy could be drawn with off-road rally racing in Europe, or Australian V8 Supercars.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

The engineering team behind Dale Earnhardt’s #88 NASCAR racing machine optimizes his ride for each race track and the racing conditions each week to give Dale the best chance to get the win. In short there is nothing “stock” about Dale’s stock-car – it’s a highly tuned and optimized solution designed to respond to specific conditions, and this team uses a structured, highly efficient and repeatable process to implement these optimizations. Nothing is left to chance as far as the engineering goes. Now, what happens on the race track is another story!

In much the same way our DVS engineering team implements a rigorous, repeatable and structured process to fine-tune and cost-performance optimize the R720 configuration for the DVS Simplified Appliance. This has resulted in the ability for the appliance to support up to 66% more users than the previous generation appliance. The appliance now supports up to 129 basic, up to 100 standard and up to 70 premium workload users. Complete details for the configuration and specs are published in the appliance reference architecture which will soon be posted at dell.com/dvssimplified.

As with the previous generation, the DVS Simplified Appliance is a simple, practical appliance based VDI solution consolidating the optimized Dell PowerEdge server – now the R720 – with factory installed Citrix VDI-in-a-box software, Citrix XenServer hypervisor and is fully backed by world-class Dell ProSupport with a 3-year support package. With DVS Simplified Appliance you can be up and running and running in as little as an afternoon!

Dell Wyse T10 thin clientAnd there is one more thing! I need to mention Dell Wyse thin clients and how excited we are to welcome the Wyse team into Dell. No other desktop virtualization solution provider can match Dell’s cloud client computing breadth, flexibility and ease of integration with existing IT environments. As the ideal complement to the Dell Simplified DVS Appliance, Dell cloud client computing products are unsurpassed at lowering total cost of ownership while enabling extremely high security and proving the ultimate user experience. An excellent example is the Dell Wyse T10 thin client has been tested with VDI-in-a-Box, and is certified as Citrix Ready. The T10 delivers outstanding performance based on its system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, and a built-in media processor delivers smooth multimedia, bi-directional audio and Flash playback.

To summarize – the NEW 12G PowerEdge R720 based DVS Simplified Appliance is available now! Please contact your Dell Account Rep. or your preferred Dell PartnerDirect reseller to get started with the DVS Simplified Appliance today!
