Cause

Backups fail due to inability to run consistency check (using Eseutil) on the Exchange databases.

Resolution

Edit dataset to enable the option "Disable consistency check (recommended only if there is more than two members in DAG)"

As indicated in the option's name, ONLY enable this option if this an Exchange Database Availability Group (DAG) with two or more nodes in the cluster.  

If this is a stand-alone Exchange server or if allowing the consistency check on Exchange DAG is wanted, then adjust the values for the following options in the dataset:

 

  • #IOs between pauses
  • Duration of pauses (ms)

The default values for both parameters are 1000 ms. Try lower values such as 500 and monitor the backup performance. Adjust up or down as necessary.
