Symptoms

Unable to log in to AVI (https: //NVE_hostname/avi) to perform software version or security updates for NVE server.

AVI webpage login attempt gives the following error:

  • avi-cli commands fail to run and cannot be used to perform the upgrade as per the below example:
nve:~ # avi-cli <NVE-hostname> --listrepository
Enter server password:
ERROR: main: GET response error: {:response=>#<Net::HTTPUnauthorized 401 Unauthorized readbody=true>}
  • Root password is confirmed to be correct and not expired using the following "chage" command:
nve:~ # chage -l root
Last password change : Feb 24, 2023
Password expires : never
Password inactive : never
Account expires : Jan 01, 2026
Minimum number of days between password change : 0
Maximum number of days between password change : 99999
Number of days of warning before password expires : 7
  • Running "chage" command for AVI user throws an error or failure to log in:
nve:~ # sudo -u avi sudo -A /usr/local/avamar/lib/avi/avi_secure.sh -chage

Cause

NVE is configured with non-English locale customization, which disallows password authorization to the AVI although same password can be used to log in to and manage the NVE operating system. In the command output snippets above, NVE language was set to German.

Resolution

  1. Modify the /etc/sysconfig/language file on NVE to enforce English locale by setting the variable 
RC_LC_ALL=en_US
  1. A reboot of the NVE is required after modification in order for the change to take effect.
 
NOTE: When non-English locale is set on the NVE, the AVI webpage usually displays "Avamar Installation Manager" along with Avamar version in the title. This is changed to "NetWorker Installation Manager" when locale is changed back to English and avi is working as expected.
