Data Domain upgrade failed: file system shutdown error

Summary: During a Data Domain operating system (DDOS) upgrade, you may see a failure due to the filesystem not shutting down properly. Retrying the upgrade will often enable the upgrade to succeed. The Failure to shutdown the filesystem can occur due to a race condition experienced in the code. ...

Symptoms

During a DDOs upgrade, you can experience a rare race condition which causes the Filesystem to not be able to shutdown in preparation for the DDOS upgrade to take place.  You will see an alert saying the filesystem failed to cleanly shutdown and a core will be generated.

Example of typical output:

# system upgrade start x.x.x.x-xxxxxx.rpm

The 'system upgrade' command upgrades the Data Domain OS. File access
is interrupted during the upgrade. The system reboots automatically
after the upgrade.
Are you sure? (yes|no) [no]: yes

ok, proceeding.

Output from ddfs.info:

dd_upgrade: INFO: Event posted: p0-31 (1100001f:285212703): EVT-UPGRADE-00002: Upgrade failure occurred.
ddr_stated: INFO: Event posted: m0-14 (2100000e:553648142): EVT-FILESYS-00004: The filesystem failed to shutdown cleanly.

Resolution

The shutdown error can usually be safely ignored.  For commands that failed due to this shutdown error, they can succeed if issued again.

If problem persists, please contact your Service Provider for assistance.

Also, note the failure to shut down the FS properly can occur any time the FS process is being stopped, not necessarily as part of the DDOS process.

Additional Information

NOTE :
We recommend the following when re-attempting the upgrade again:

1- Enable the filesystem if it is currently disabled:

## filesys enable

2- Clear the upgrade failure alerts first before re-attempting the upgrade again , as it may cause the upgrade to fail one more time .

## alerts show current Id Post Time Severity Class Object Message ------ ------------------------ --------- ----------------- ------ -------------------------------------------- p0-291 Mon Jun 10 14:20:31 2019 EMERGENCY SystemMaintenance EVT-UPGRADE-00002: Upgrade failure occurred. ------ ------------------------ --------- ----------------- ------ -------------------------------------------- There is 1 active alert. ## alerts clear alert-id <p0-291>

3- Disable the protocols :(CIFS , NFS, DDboost):

## cifs disable
## nfs disable
## ddboost disable

4- Disable the file system:

##filesys disable

5- Re-try the upgrade again.

6- After you are done successfully with the upgrade , enable the filesystem and the protocols.
