Symptoms
Is your screen affected by plugging or unplugging your AC adapter?
If you own an XPS 7390 2-in-1 or 9x00 laptop, you may experience that the Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panel momentarily goes blank. This happens whenever the AC adapter is either connected or disconnected.
Affected Product Types:
- XPS 7390 2-in-1 laptop
- XPS 9300 laptop
- XPS 9500 laptop
- XPS 9700 laptop
Cause
Note: This is only seen on High Dynamic Range (HDR) display capable laptops. There are additional power-related settings on these laptops.
Resolution
This is expected behavior on laptops with HDR panels. If you have a laptop with an HDR-capable integrated display, there are additional power-related settings for HDR. This is because these displays use more power than non-HDR displays.
Note: These laptops are working as designed.
If you are running your laptop on battery, playing HDR content can reduce battery life. HDR is turned off by default when running on battery. You can remove this behavior by disabling HDR.
What is HDR?
Simplified down High Dynamic Range is a type of LCD display. The display creates a more significant difference between the bright parts of an image and the dark parts of an image. This helps create more realistic images and helps preserve detail in scenes where otherwise the contrast ratio of the display may be a limiting factor.
