Fail a VDC (PSO)

Failing a VDC or permanent site outage (PSO) is done from the VDC level. Removing a VDC from replication group (RG) initiates recovery, but failed VDC does not initiate recovery.

Prerequisites

NOTE Refer KB 000180322 , for minimum requirements for triggering PSO and TSO in ECS.

This operation requires the System Administrator role in ECS.

Stop any workload to the system and wait until data replication is complete between the VDCs.

NOTE The time taken to complete data replication depends on the workload and network condition.

Wait for more than 15 minutes after you power off the VDC for the system to confirm that the VDC is off. For unplanned PSO, ensure the VDC is not accessible for more than 15 minutes.

Restrictions to fail a VDC

  • You cannot fail a VDC that is powered on. If a VDC is powered off for less than 15 minutes, the system does not detect that the VDC is off, which results in Fail VDC operation to fail.
  • You cannot fail a VDC if it is the only VDC in a replication group.

Steps

  1. Log in to the ECS Portal.
  2. In the ECS Portal, select Manage > Virtual Data Center. Click Edit and select Fail this VDC. Wait for a few minutes to ensure the VDC status shows Permanent Site Outage.
Refer to the restrictions in the prerequisites section for limitations of this operation.
  3. Select Manage > Replication Group, click Edit and remove the failed VDC from each replication group.
Refer to the restrictions in the prerequisites section for limitations of this operation.
  4. Select Monitoring > Geo Replication > Failover Processing. The Failover Progress column must show 100% done on all remaining VDCs in the replication group.
  5. Select Monitoring > Geo Replication > Bootstrap Processing. The Bootstrap Progress (%) column must show 100% done on all remaining VDCs in the replication group.
The time that is taken for both the Failover process and the Bootstrap Process to complete depends on the amount of data on the failed VDC.
NOTE You may have to wait for 5 to 10 minutes before the Failover and the Bootstrap process show the status on the page.
  6. Select Manage > Virtual Data Center, click Edit and delete the Permanently failed VDC. If the VDC is still associated with any of the replication groups, this operation fails.
