Symptoms

The computer shuts down when switching the power source from AC to a Type-C adapter.

Affected Platforms:

  • Dell Pro Micro Plus QBM1250
  • Dell Pro Micro Plus XE QBM1250
  • OptiPlex 3000 Thin Client

Cause

The computer does not support switching power sources without shutting down power to the computer first. The dual power does not support hot swap and behavior as below.

  1. When the computer is off, the computer is connected both the AC adapter and the Type-C port/dock. When powered on, the AC adapter becomes the main power source.
  2. If the computer is off, either the AC adapter or Type-C port/dock can be connected. Once powered on the first connected source remains the main power supply, even if another source is added later.
  3. Unplugging the primary power source while the computer is on causes it to shut down.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior of the Dell Micro Form Factor computers.
