Troubleshooting Windows reset

The troubleshooting steps are applicable to both Windows 10 and Windows 8.1.

Steps

  1. Perform the following steps to disable and reenable reagentc.
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Enter reagentc.exe /disable.
      Operation Successful message is displayed.
    3. Enter reagent.exe /enable.

  2. Perform the following steps to run a system-wide file scan to check if any files are missing and try to repair them:
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Enter sfc /scannow.
      This process takes some time to scan the system and attempt any repairs if possible.

  3. Restart your PC after the scan is complete, and reset your PC again.
  4. Perform the following steps to clean and repair the Windows image. You can attempt either a basic scan or an advanced scan.
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Enter dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth.
    3. If step 4b does not resolve the issue, enter dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth for a more advanced scan and repair. This step takes a longer time to complete.
      After the scan is complete, restart the system, and reset your PC again.

  5. If all the methods mentioned above fail to provide a resolution to the issue, create an external recovery media to use Windows reset, or use existing Windows installation media to perform Windows reset.
