Enable pre-scripts and post-scripts in a protection policy

Before you can use a pre-script or post-script with a backup, you must also use the PowerProtect Data Manager UI to enable the script in the appropriate protection policy.

1. In the PowerProtect Data Manager UI, select Protection > Protection Policies.
   The Protection Policies window appears.
2. Click Add or Edit to add or edit the appropriate protection policy. Follow the instructions in the protection policies section.
3. When the Pre/Post Script (Optional) page appears, complete the following settings on the page:
   NOTE:The Pre/Post Script (Optional) page appears only when the host is enabled for the use of scripts.

   • Pre Script—Select a compatible pre-script from the drop-down list. As an alternative, click Add Script to open the Add Script page to either upload a script file or copy the script into the Script text box. On the Add Script page, complete the fields as described in the preceding topic.

     Select the plus sign for Additional Pre Script if you want to add another pre-script for a different type of operating system.

     If the script fails—Select Continue job or Skip job to either continue or skip the backup job when the pre-script operation fails.

     NOTE:If you select Continue job and the pre-script or post-script fails during the backup operation, the backup job status appears as Completed with Exceptions.

     Timeout—Specify the maximum time that the system waits for the pre-script operation to complete. The default timeout is 15 minutes. The minimum timeout setting is Off, indicating no timeout. The maximum timeout is 24 hours, specified as hours or minutes.

     NOTE:When a timeout is not specified or the value is Off, suspended jobs wait for a response from the script.

   • Post Script—Select a compatible post-script from the drop-down list. As an alternative, click Add Script to open the Add Script page to either upload a script file or copy the script into the Script text box. On the Add Script page, complete the fields as described in the preceding topic.

     Select the plus sign for Additional Post Script if you want to add another post-script for a different type of operating system.

     Run only when—Select to run the post-script only when the pre-script operation is successful, the backup is successful, or both. By default, the post-script always runs.

     Timeout—Specify the maximum time that the system waits for the post-script operation to complete. The default timeout is 15 minutes. The minimum timeout setting is Off, indicating no timeout. The maximum timeout is 24 hours, specified as hours or minutes.

     NOTE:When a timeout is not specified or the value is Off, suspended jobs wait for a response from the script.

     Wait for the script to run before completing the job—Select this option to have the post-script complete its operation before the backup job is marked as completed.

     NOTE:When you select Wait for the script to run before completing the job, the post-script starts running before the backup job completes and the post-script step appears on the Protection Jobs window.

     When you do not select Wait for the script to run before completing the job, the post-script starts running after the backup job completes and the post-script step does not appear on the Protection Jobs window.

   • Run As—Optionally select the user credentials that the agent service uses to run the script on the host system.

     If you do not set this Run As option, the agent service runs the script as the privileged or non-privileged user that was set during the application agent installation. For example, if the agent service is set to run as a non-privileged (non-root) user on Linux or UNIX, the agent service runs the script as the non-privileged user ppdmusr.

     NOTE:If the agent service was installed as a non-privileged user, the agent service does not have the permissions to run script commands as a privileged user. It is recommended that you specify the appropriate privileged user credentials for the Run As option.
   • Run script on specific days—If required, select this option and then select one or more days when the script runs. When this option is not selected, the script runs every day.
