Recovering the Active Directory Data at Granular Level

Perform granular level restore of active directory objects by using the Active Directory Granular Level Restore option.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure you are using the latest version of PowerProtect Data Manager.
  • Ensure you performed the backup of Active Directory through the asset Disaster Recovery, with the latest version of PowerProtect Data Manager. For more information, see Perform bare-metal recovery of Windows clusters and Perform a system-state recovery.
  • Ensure the user account performing ADGLR is a member of Domain Administrator.

Steps

  1. Open PowerProtect Data Manager.
  2. On the Restore tab, click Asset to see the list of assets, select the Disaster Recovery asset that you want to recover.
  3. In the list for the assets, select the appropriate Disaster Recovery back-up.
  4. Click View Copies to view the backed-up copies.
  5. Select the desired backup copy and click Active Directory Granular Level Restore.
    The Active Directory Granular Level Restore screen appears.
  6. Select one of the following options, from the Restore Location pane:
    • Restore to original host: A warning message appears stating the result of choosing this option.
    • Restore to alternate host: Select the appropriate host to restore. The dropdown lists all the registered PowerProtect Data Manager hosts.
    NOTE:
    • Ensure the user account performing ADGLR is a member of Domain Administrator.
    • To restore to an alternate host, ensure the appropriate alternate host is a registered PowerProtect Data Manager host.
    1. Select Add Credentials from the Run As dropdown.
    2. Enter inputs in the text fields for Name, User Name, and Password. Where User Name format should be username@domain. For example, administrator@abc.com.
    3. Click Save to save your inputs
  7. Click Mount.
    Once the back-up is mounted Mounting is successfully comepleted message appears.
  8. Click Add Attributes to see the list of attributes available by default for the objects.
    The Add Attributes Columns window appears listing the attributes.
  9. Select the desired attributes from the list.
    NOTE:Click the checkbox beside Attributes Name to select all the available attributes.
  10. Click Add on the Add Attributes Columns window.
  11. Click Next.
    The Object Search pane appears showing the selected attribute columns along with the default attribute columns.
  12. Click Add to choose the objects. The Add Items window appears displaying the active directory.
    Expand the domain listed below the Active Directory to see the containers of the domain. When you choose and expand a container you can see the list of objects and leaf objects associated with it, on the right pane of the screen.
    1. Select the desired objects to restore.
      The screen displays the granular details of the objects along with the attribute columns selected previously.
    2. Select the desired granular objects from the list.
    3. Click Add to add these objects to restore.
      The Object Search pane appears showing the selected objects along with the attribute columns. Provides an option to Add more objects to restore or to Remove the objects from the list.

  13. Click Next.
    The Restore Type pane appears.
  14. From the Restore Type pane, select:
    1. Resore Type
      • Restore to original container: A warning message appears stating the result of choosing this option.
      • Restore to alternate container: Browse to choose the alternate container.
    2. Restore Settings:
      • Restore entire object
      • Restore selected attributes only: Lists the previously selected attributes and provides option to Add or Remove attributes.
  15. Click Next.
    • The Options pane appears, if you chose User as your object type to restore.
    • If you chose other object type, the Summary pane appears.
    • If you see the Options pane:
    1. Select the desired option from Password Options:
      • Set default password for users: After a restore if the password is not set, using this option you can set the password for all the users.
      • Domain admin to set password manually: This option is selected by default.
    2. Select the desired option from Additional Options.
      • Disable user account
      • User must change password at next logon
      NOTE:If you do not choose any option, the system will automatically consider the settings available from the back-up object.
  16. Click Next.
    The Summary pane appears.
  17. Confirm your selections and click Restore.
    Use Edit to modify your selections.

Results

You can go to the Jobs window, a restore job appears with a progress bar and start time.
