Installing the primary M.2 SSD module

NOTE:For computers shipped with M.2 2280 or 2230 Solid-state drive installed in slot 3 and/or in slot 5.

NOTE:Slot 3 and slot 5 support PCIe Gen3- and Optane M.2 Solid-state drives.

If you are replacing a component, remove the existing component before performing the installation procedure.

The figure indicates the location of the primary M.2 SSD and provides a visual representation of the installation procedure.

M.2 2230 SSD

Installing the primary M.2 2230 SSD module

For M.2 2280 SSD:
1. Place the M.2 SSD onto its slot on the computer.
2. Replace the (M2x3) screw to secure the M.2 SSD to the computer.
For M.2 2230 SSD:
1. Place the M.2 SSD into the SSD holder.
2. Replace the (M2x2) screw to secure the M.2 SSD to the holder.
3. Place the M.2 SSD module onto its slot on the computer.
4. Replace the (M2x3) screw to secure the M.2 SSD module to the computer.
Carefully align and insert the two tabs on the SSD thermal plate into the slots on the inner frame to secure the SSD thermal plate in place.
Replace the (M2x3) screw to secure the SSD thermal plate to the M.2 SSD.
Repeat the above steps to install the other SSD modules in the computer.
