NetWorker NVP-vProxy: FLR fails to browse compressed folders - Unable to perform FLR Agent operation 'browse_files' on VM: Access is denied

Summary: The NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) integration is configured with the vProxy appliance. When attempting to perform file-level restore (FLR) of a vProxy saveset, we are unable to drill down into a compressed partition and encounter an "Access is denied" error. The folder that prompts the "Access is denied" error is compressed. NetWorker vProxy FLR has known limitations, which include compressed partitions. Symptoms

  • The NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) integration is configured with the vProxy appliance. When performing a file-level restore (FLR) via the NetWorker Management Console (NMC), the browse is able to display the content of several directories.  When browsing certain directories an "Access is denied" error is generated even though the FLR account user has local administrator permissions on the server.

  • The directory is accessible to the same FLR account user if manually browsing the mounted file system via Windows Explorer (Ex: C:\Program Files (x86)\EMC\vProxy FLR Agent\flr\mountpoints\FLR240151626\00-D$\Directory1\Directory2) on the target virtual machine.
  • The directory is using Windows compression. 

Cause

Windows compression (and deduplication) is a documented limitation for vProxy FLR. See the NetWorker VMware Integration Guide, available through https://www.dell.com/support/home/product-support/product/networker/docs

Resolution

Workaround:
Mount the saveset on the target virtual machine (VM) and manually copy the required files, via Windows Explorer, from the FLR mount point directory.
