RPM Update Method:
Online Update Method.
-
Only works with minor releases
-
Easiest way to update since the repository path is built into the appliance
-
Since it requires an Internet connection, it does not work in dark sites
-
Locked down proxies can also be a problem
Perform Online Appliance Update.
-
Perform from the Admin Console under Application Management

-
Ensure that the Update Repository Path is https://linux.dell.com/repo/hardware/vcenter-plugin-x64/latest
-
Available Virtual Appliance Version Mode should have checkboxes for RPM
-
Select the Update Virtual Appliance version to begin the upgrade
Offline Update Method
-
Useful for dark sites or scenarios where Internet connectivity is not allowed
-
Only supports HTTP shares
Perform Offline Appliance Update.
-
Create HTTP share and copy the entire directory from https://linux.dell.com/repo/hardware/vcenter-plugin-x64/latest/
to the HTTP Share
NOTE: It needs the full directory structure as-is.
-
Perform from the Admin Console under Application Management

-
Ensure that the Update Repository Path is the HTTP Share
-
Available Virtual Appliance Version Mode should have checkboxes for RPM
-
Select the Update Virtual Appliance version to begin the upgrade
OVF Update Method:
OVF Update Method Basics
-
Commonly called backup and restore
-
Use for major upgrades, like 4.x to 5.x
-
The basic process is deploying a new OMIVV Appliance and restoring the data from the old version on it
Backup OMIVV
-
Performed under the Backup and Restore tab
-
Supports Network File Share (NFS) and CIFS Shares
-
Recommended Scheduling regularly even in non-Appliance upgrade scenarios
Perform the OVF Update Method.
NOTE: Per documentation, it is recommended not to unregister OMIVV because it breaks Proactive HA Health Sensors.
-
Back up the appliance being upgraded
-
Turn Off the Backed Up Appliance
-
Deploy a new OMIVV Appliance OVF
-
Power on the new appliance
-
Set up the Network settings
NOTE: It is recommended to keep the IP and FQDN the same between the appliances to avoid extra configuration and possible issues.
-
If using a custom certificate, import it
-
Browse to the Backup and Restore in the new Appliance Admin Console
-
Put in the CIFS/NFS Share backed up in the first Step and select Restore Now
-
Verify Appliance in vSphere Client in Administration > Solutions > Client Plug-ins
NOTE: OMIVV should show as installed and enabled.

-
Now run Inventory on all hosts in the new appliance
Troubleshooting Post Upgrade:
200000 error
-
Restart OMIVV Appliance(On 4.X revisions restarting VCenter to allow the plug-in to update was often necessary)
-
If the issue persists, check for an old version of OMIVV in VCSA
Path —/etc/vmware/vsphere-ui/vc-packages/vsphere-clientserenity
-
Look for
com.dell.plugin.OpenManage -
Delete the older one associated with the previous version and restart VCenter services
200002 error
-
WSDL Error when the plugin is expecting a specific thumbprint but receiving another
-
Restarting VCenter will resolve this
