Symptoms

LCC or LCC cable reseat/replaced between the SP and bus 0-0 LCC

In VNX models with a Storage Processor Enclosures (SPE) architecture, replacing a Link Control Card (LCC) on the first Disk Array Enclosure (Bus0 Enclosure 0) results in the Storage Processor connected to that LCC to reboot or panic and reboot.

This can lead to both SP's rebooting at the same time and cause DU.

Cause

  • In SPE VNX models, the system drives are located in the first 4 slots on the first connected DAE.
  • Reseating or replacing either the LCC on the DAE or the SAS cable connecting the SP and the DAE will result in a disruption of the connection between the SP and its system drives, resulting in the reboot.

Resolution

Schedule a time that the customer will allow a single SP reboot.
Shutdown the SP first.
Remove the LCC, keeping it out for 60 seconds before inserting.

Before any activity regarding the SP and LCC 0-0 work being done, make sure the proper precautions are taken so that the SP reboot will not affect accessibility;
  • All connected hosts have logged in paths to both SPs.
  • Path fail-over is set up correctly.
NOTE: Follow the SolVe process for replacing the SP and the LCC for the proper processes, however in this case the parts will be reseated, not replaced.
Should this process need to be done on both LCCs, then repeat the process on the peer SP after the first SP is back online and waiting for 10 minutes

Additional Information

When replacing hardware, make sure to follow the correct procedure generated from SolVe.
